The Semi-finals of the 2023 SLE Andrew Johns Cup and SLE Laurie Daley Cup have now kicked off, with three matches played on Saturday and one more to come on Sunday 19 March. Read on to see who has already booked their spot in next week’s Grand Finals.

Strong second half helps NMR Knights to victory

Newcastle-Maitland Region Knights have produced a stunning turnaround in the second half to secure a 24-16 win in their SLE Andrew Johns Cup Semi-final clash against Monaro Colts.

Ringing in the opening weekend of finals for regional Junior Reps, the Knights flew out of the blocks for fullback Mitchell Balzer to score just four minutes into the contest.

But it was all Monaro for the remainder of the half, quickly responding in the ninth minute through lock forward Byron Cahill. Colts speedster Jet Millard followed up soon after with a try of his own, bringing the score to 10-4.

Then a few minutes out from halftime, No.14 Malachi Thompson found his way to the try-line, with fullback Cooper Johnston’s conversion taking the lead to 12 points.

It was a different story coming out of the sheds as the Knights mounted their fightback, and five-eighth Jaylan Bishop played a starring role in the second half with a pair of tries.

Among the other scorers for Newcastle-Maitland were halfback Jack Thompson and hooker Lochlan Clenton, with winger Darcy Mitchell kicking two conversions to round out the 24-16 margin.

The Newcastle-Maitland Region Knights Under 16's representative side have progressed to the Andrew Johns Cup Grand Final to be held this Saturday.

The team is made up of all local players and will form the large majority of the nib Newcastle Knights Harold Matthews Cup squad for next season.

Coming off a strong win over the Monaro Colts in the Semi-Final last weekend, the team will tackle the Central Coast Roosters to decide the Andrew Johns Cup competition for 2023.

Also, the Newcastle-Maitland Region Knights Laurie Daley Cup side (Under 18's) made their way to the Semi-Finals after an impressive five-round campaign, but were unfortunately knocked out in the Finals by the Monaro Colts.

Congratulations to both teams on successful seasons.

The NMR Knights Andrew Johns Cup side won three out of their five regular season games, plus a victory over the Monaro Colts to progress to the Grand Final.

The team achieved wins over the Northern Rivers Titans (46-12), Riverina Bulls (40-0) and Central Coast Roosters (30-14).

Last Saturday, the Knights downed the Monaro Colts 24-16. Jaylan Bishop scored a double while Lochlan Clenton, Mitchell Balzer and Jack Thompson all crossed for one.

Meanwhile, the team will take on the Central Coast Roosters defeated the Macarthur Wests Tigers 28-16 in their Semi-Final.

Very hard to get any info on Jack with his common name and also a Jack Thompson player for the Magpies in the 1950s but it seems he was playing for one of the Knights feeder teams in February this year then it looks like we poached him. Also the only player in the team that was born in 2006. Most are 2007 with a few from 2008.

Love to know how long we have him signed up for...

That birthdate must be wrong. If it isn't then he'd be an 18 year old playing in a u17s comp and would've been a 17 year old playing in the AJ u16s comp the year before.

I've seen him train, he definitely didn't look 18 to me.

You may be right. Might have been a typo by the club. He should have missed the cut by 6 days...

Defo a typo. On that birthdates he misses the cut by almost a full year. The oldest he can be to play Matts is Jan 1st 2007.

Curious to know how they enticed him to the Warriors early in the season given we didn’t start well and by all accounts Knights look a decent team

I guess a long term development contract?
Yeah its strange. He first played for us in Round 7 March 17th. That was the 3rd to last regular season game...

There is an interesting story there.
I take it that our Australian junior talent scouting has improved exponentially since we made Cappy the dedicated Head of the dept.
He will know people who know people, the same is true of all of our new era staffing appointments, they would all add to a wider network.

Obviously we offered the young guy a promising prospect with a really good interview.

We have never had so many baby Aussies at the club, it is pretty crazy. We are looking like the other NRL teams in that regard who have the pick of the juniors over there and some would argue over here too.
