Simon Mannering has today been confirmed to extend his Vodafone Warriors captaincy reign to a fourth NRL season, leaving him on track to become the longest-serving skipper in the club’s history.

New head coach Matthew Elliott said a decision about Mannering’s continuation in the role had been announced to the players while they were in camp in Hamilton late last week.

“Simon’s an absolutely logical choice for the job,” said Elliott.

“He’s mutually respected and admired by all the players and staff for the quality he brings to our club as a leader and a player. He’s a person of strong character and a wonderful work ethic.

“It was always my intention that the announcement would be made close to us beginning our trials (the first is against Gold Coast on February 9).

“There was no need to rush it. It was all about working through a full process and making an informed decision for the right reasons. We’ve all had time together to reach this point.”

Mannering, the club’s youngest captain when he was appointed as a 23-year-old in late 2009, welcomed the opportunity to have a fourth season in charge.

“It was a massive honour when I was first offered the job and that feeling hasn’t changed,” he said.

“I’m privileged to lead the Vodafone Warriors every time we play but being captain isn’t about what’s best for me. It’s about what suits the team best. It’s the same for all of us.”

Still only 26, Mannering has already clocked up 165 appearances since his NRL debut as an 18-year-old in 2005, more than any other player in the squad; he has also played 30 Tests for the Kiwis.

After playing his 100th NRL game in the final match of the 2009 season, Mannering was appointed to lead the club in 2010. His total of 65 matches as captain leaves him behind only Steve Price, who led the Vodafone Warriors 91 times from 2005 to 2009.

Mannering’s appointment comes with the Vodafone Warriors’ trials programme beginning in just 23 days.

The schedule starts against Gold Coast at Pizzey Park, Burleigh Heads, on Saturday, February 9 (5.15pm kick-off local time), the same day the NRL year is kick-started with the annual NRL All Stars v Indigenous All Stars match, this year being played at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane for the first time (7.00pm kick-off local time).

A week later the Vodafone Warriors have their first trial of the year in New Zealand – and their only one in the North Island – when they meet Penrith at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton on Saturday, February 16 (4.00pm kick-off) while their final 2013 trial is against Brisbane at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday, February 23 (7.30pm kick-off), the first time NRL football has ever been played in Dunedin.

The Gold Coast trial will be Matthew Elliott’s first game as Vodafone Warriors head coach and may also provide an opportunity for ex-Titans centre-winger Dominique Peyroux to make his Vodafone Warriors debut against his former club.

On the same day Feleti Mateo and Dane Nielsen will be playing in the NRL All Stars-Indigenous All Stars match in Brisbane.

Had no doubt about Mannering being the captain. Good to put one piece of the puzzle into place. Congratulation to Mannering...

I do hope there are some changes to his captaining technique, and the teams communication skills in general. I want to see player communication in the ingoal after conceding points. I want to see Mannering talking throughout the game, and I don't want to see a 14th player on the field in a yellow t-shirt for 80 minutes!

I'd love to see a trainer/waterboy on the field for as long as possible because it would mean we're attacking and not defending considering a trainer/waterboy is not supposed to on the field while a team is defending unless they attending to a injured player etc. ;)

See what you mean I say waterbpy talks to captain and he talks to his players, as a former coach I know not to confuse the cattle.

As much as I agree with you, I just cant see that happening. He may have a slight increase in communication at the insistence of ME but it certainly wont be to the extent that you or I would like. He only talks to the refs when he really needs to (not neccesarily a bad thing though. Thurston is over the top IMO). The fact is, he has been captain for 3 years now and hasnt changed his stripes once. He has now been chosen by 3 coaches now who all would of been completely aware of his captaincy style. At 26 I think his personality is locked in place...

Your thoughts on now that Iro is not there seemingly for the whole 80 minutes yakking, might mean Simon will take more of that role. It could have been difficult for him to interrupt and be seen as countering Coaching staff.? I repeat, Waterboy talks to Captain, Captain talks to team, at some point the Coaches have to let the Captain lead.

Pity that the team waiting behind the goal line while the kickers getting ready can't do to much movement which might be seen as distracting the kicker. Imagine what our defence would be like if Ruben was waterboy and was to put them through a two minute 'hell' drill after any try was scored against us.

Mannering could also work on not talking to the ref every five minutes, i think he has the highest rate of complaints to the refs last year in the nrl

i think its a good tactic. Gives our guys a breather and helps get our d line in check.

Yet, when he first got the job, fans were complained because they thought he was talking to the refs enough.

Cool. I don't think it would have been good to change. Who is vice-captain? Martel?

Yeah I wouldn't mind Martel getting it. Failing that depending on whether TL can cement his spot he'd be another candidate, teams seem to like having 'forward' and 'back' leaders.

Elliots rebuild includes making anew the old.

Interesting how he says that Mannerings appointment was an overwhelming obvious choice yet still goes through the exercise of dangling him all this time before affirming the man.

Quasi new age speak is the bread and butter of Elliot , we the fans are told it was necessary to conduct an open and broad process , Elliot uses terms like 'the group' as easily as some of us use outmoded words like team.

Reading between the lines a few will cynically see this as a mere reinvention of the wheel ( heck Mannering was Captain Material before Matty deemed it so ) some may even consider it a slight on Warrior history since Elliot has essentially taken what predates his influence here and acted as though ' nothing has merit unless he discovers it for himself'.

Personally I think it's an old school technique in a new shiny wrapper.

If you want to change something e.g convert race of people to a new religion , borrow what is already in place.

Absolute power will rest With Mathew Elliot in his tenure here.

It remains to be seen whether the locals end up Canonizing St Mathew....

Or devouring him in a pagan Warrior Ritual:eek:

Two types of coaches sacked and will be sacked

I think Elliott is saying I am the coach and although obvious or doesn't happen till I say so. Good on him, he is the boss.

O dont think the coach should be too close to players. No one at man united ever calls Ferguson Alex. He has done ok over the years.

Player power is bullshit

As much as people gave them shit for it South's having like 200 captains actually worked for them last year.

Best move keeping Mannering as the captain who interacts with the ref, he's one of the best captains in the NRL at buying time for his team due to his approach with the refs; fuck he needed to be last year with their fitness. Then having Leuluai, Friend, Feleti, Sam Rapira, Manu, Lowrie, Ropati and Lillyman in a shared vice captain/leadership group type role would work I reckon

I was just about to post preety much the same thing haha, Agree totally....Mannering can be the captain on the field, talking to the ref etc (hopefully not quite as much tho) but have five or so unoffical captains. TL, Martal and Friend for sure!
