Morons overlook incumbent Kurt Capewell for Origin 1 - warriors.kiwi

In-form One New Zealand Warriors back rower-centre Kurt Capewell has been overlooked by QLD Morons coach Billy Slater for the opening match of the 2025 State of Origin series at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Wednesday week.

The 31-year-old appeared in games two and three of last year’s series but hasn’t made Slater’s initial 20-man squad.

Capewell has been impressive this season for the Warriors alternating between the second row and the centres, where he has been asked to fill in with a number of outside backs injured.

He misses out but the QLD Morons squad has a lot of other New Zealand links including former Warrior Jesse Arthars, who's among the additional three players named. Auckland-born, he’s eligible for the Kiwis but has gone down the Origin line instead.

He had a loan season with the Warriors in 2022, making 12 appearances which ultimately rebooted his Brisbane career. He has now played 91 NRL games, 67 for the Broncos with 11 tries in 11 games this season including one against the Dragons on Sunday when he revealed a lot more than just his try-scoring ability.

Fullback Kalyn Ponga has New Zealand heritage and, along with Arthars, has represented the Māori All Stars while winger Valentine Holmes’ father is a New Zealander.

Auckland-born centre Robert Toia has been named to make his Origin debut in a side which also includes Gisborne-born front rower Moeaki Fotuaika and Auckland-born second rower Jeremiah Nanai with another Aucklander Kulikefu Finefeuiaki in the additional players.
