Madison Bartlett (born 5 December 1994) is a New Zealand rugby league footballer who plays as a winger for the Canberra Raiders in the NRL Women's Premiership.

She is a New Zealand and New Zealand 9s representative.

Born in Wairoa, Bartlett played sevens rugby, basketball and touch football before taking up rugby league with the Richmond Roses in 2016.

In 2018, Bartlett underwent double shoulder reconstruction surgery, missing the entire season. She had dislocated her shoulders 16 teams before undergoing surgery.

On 22 June 2019, she made her debut for New Zealand, starting on the wing and scoring a try in a 46–8 win over Samoa. In September 2019, she joined the New Zealand Warriors NRL Women's Premiership team. In Round 1 of the 2019 NRL Women's season, she made her debut for the Warriors in a 16–12 win over the Sydney Roosters.

On 19 October 2019, she came off the bench in New Zealand's 17–15 2019 Rugby League World Cup 9s final win over Australia.

In September 2020, Bartlett was one of five New Zealand-based Warriors' players to travel to Australia to play in the 2020 NRL Women's premiership. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the players had to quarantine for 14 days on entering Australia and 14 days on return to New Zealand when the season was completed.

In early 2022, Bartlett played in six of seven matches for the St. George Illawarra Dragons in the postponed 2021 NRL Women's season, including the Grand Final on 10 April 2022.

In early June, the Gold Coast Titans announced that Bartlett had signed to play for the club in the 2022 NRL Women's season.

In October she was selected for the New Zealand squad at the delayed 2021 Women's Rugby League World Cup in England.

In 2023 she signed with the Canberra Raiders. In 2024 she re-signed with the Canberra Raiders until 2026.

Women In League Week: Madison Bartlett, Kiwi Fern and Akarana Falcon

Posted on July 13, 2017 by Ashley Stanley

To celebrate Women In League Week, Beyond the Mark is sharing different perspectives of women involved in rugby league. Madison Bartlett recently made the Kiwi Ferns, represents the Akarana Falcons and Richmond Rovers.

How did you get involved in rugby league?
Basically I was playing a lot of other sports with friends that had already started playing league…they told me to come down to a training and try it out – I have never looked back since. Although it was tough to get used to the contact at first (it still is now) but I love it! When I first told my parents I was playing they laughed, however now they’re at every game supporting 🙂

What advice would you give to women trying to make the Kiwi Ferns?
Talent only gets you so far, you have to put in the work and the extras that nobody else can see. It’s the same as any sport really, you have to be willing to do the work because sooner or later there’s going to be people that come along who may not be as good as you (YET) but they’re willing to work 10x harder than you are. It’s all about being honest with yourself. Always look for ways to improve your game, whether that’s asking and talking to coaches or other people in your position, even just watching more footy. Also enjoy the game, because if you aren’t enjoying it, why play?

Biggest lesson learnt in rugby league?
Never give up, if you don’t make it the first time just get back up, train harder and try again.
My mum reminded me the day before going into camp for the ANZAC test that 6 months earlier I nearly gave up! I felt like i had tried so hard and done everything I could but still wasn’t good enough. But after rethinking, it made me hungrier and ready to train harder to prove I was good enough.
It’s also taught me a lot about myself, patience and resilience – having to overcome two major injuries was hard and it can make you really depressed at times. I shattered my ankle 3 years ago at nationals and that took about eight months to recover, at the latest nationals five weeks ago i broke my collarbone.
It can be really tough, especially for myself as i enjoy training and am always pushing to be a better player. The set backs can be tough physically but also mentally.

What is the best thing about playing rugby league?
It’s very challenging but most of all I get to do something i enjoy alongside some of my best friends. It also allows me to go overseas and hopefully i’ll get the opportunity to do that many more times. The women’s game isn’t getting any smaller and I hope one day there is something like the NRL for women and i’ll get to be apart of that.

What do you enjoy outside of rugby league?
Outside of league i’m your typical girl – I LOVE shopping, I like getting my nails done, catching up with friends for coffee and lunch, and attending as many music concerts/ festivals as possible. In summer I also play tag!

The Raiders are pleased to announce an international representative joining the club for its inaugural NRLW season.

Kiwi Fern Madison Bartlett have signed with the club for the 2023 season.

Bartlett joins Tungai, Simaima Taufa, Zahara Temara, Monalisa Soliola, Ash Quinlan and Sophie Holyman at the club, who were announced last week.

Bartlett has played six matches for the Kiwi Ferns, including being part of their 2021 World Cup campaign.

The 28-year-old has also played four seasons of NRLW, playing two seasons with the Warriors (2019-20), one season with the Dragons (2021) and one with the Titans (2022).

Bartlett is looking forward to relocating to Canberra from New Zealand for the club’s inaugural season.

“I’m super excited to have the opportunity to join the Raiders, especially being a part of the inaugural team,” Bartlett said.

“Bortho (Raiders NRLW coach Darrin Borthwick) is creating something special and I’m very privileged to be a part of it.

“He’s secured some awesome signings and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to learn, train and play alongside them.”

Borthwick is excited to coach both Tungai and Bartlett and see them take to the field when the season kicks off in late July.

“I’m really excited for Shak,” Borthwick said.

“She’s a great person but once again we’ve managed to get a good player as well.

“I think it’s a good change for her too to come down here and I know she’s very excited about it and she can’t wait to get down here and rip in with her teammates.

“Similar to Shak, I’ve worked with Mads before as well and I know what I get with Mads.

“She’s a great girl and she’s also a really good football player.

“She had a good World Cup with New Zealand and I think it’s important what she’s going to add to our team in terms of experience and her knowledge of the game will benefit our team for sure.”

Bartlett re-signs until end of 2026 NRLW season

The Canberra Raiders are pleased to announce that Madison Bartlett has extended her time with the club until the end of the 2026 NRLW season.

Bartlett is one of the competition’s leading try-scorers, with 18 tries from 25 games since her NRLW debut in 2019.

Bartlett was the Raiders’ leading try-scorer last season with seven tries in nine games, including scoring the team’s first ever try.

Raiders NRLW coach, Darrin Borthwick said that he is excited to lock Bartlett in for a further two seasons.

“Mads has been a big part of the NRLW competition since it started and to have her locked away for a few more years is fantastic,” Borthwick said.

“She goes quietly about her business and has some good leadership qualities and is someone that steadies the ship for us out the back.

“I’m excited for Mads that she’s decided to stay here in Canberra.”

Bartlett said she is pleased to extend her time at the club and lock in her playing future for the next few years.

“It’s good, just the certainty of it. You spend so many years of going from year-to-year contracts, it’s nice to be settled and plan for the next couple of years,” Bartlett said.

“That’s what I talked to Borth about, my short term goal is doing well with the team but I think also having a consistent coach helps with going to the next level.

“I obviously missed out on Kiwis last year but with the World Cup in 2026, I think being settled with a coach that knows what he needs to get out of me and how to get it out of me is probably one thing as well that is a real positive.

“We’ve also got some of the other girls that have extended so it’s nice to have a core group that we know is going to be here going forward so we can just continue to build each season.

“Knowing what you are going to do, you can start to plan out your life as well a little bit. Obviously with the CBA and things like that it’s nothing but beneficial for the players.”
