Police and the NSW coroner have been called in to investigate the death of a 21 year-old man, who collapsed during a lower level rugby league competition match in south-western Sydney.
Clae Webb was playing halfback for the Erina Eagles against Cabramatta at the Cabramatta Sportsground when he collapsed behind play, and later died.
The Erina Football Club said it had referred vision of the game to police, and the NSWRL, and that a coroner's investigation would now take place.
"This has been a tragic event and I hope people understand that we have needed to ensure that Clae's family has had time to inform all relevant parties before confirming his name," said Michael Newton, Erina Football Club Manager.
"Clae's family have expressed their appreciation for the support they have received from the club and the football community but they have also asked that people respect their privacy."
Witnesses at the game reported Webb fell to the ground and began convulsing before being taken to the dressing room where medical staff worked on him for 40 minutes.
He was taken to Liverpool Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Newton said counselling has been arranged for the members of each team, officials and has been offered to Webb's family.
"Everyone is a in a bit of shock at the moment," Newton said.
"There was no sign of any problem in the tackle, Clae played the ball and collapsed in back play.
"Clae was only with us a short time but he was a great kid who lived for his football."
