Broncos rocked by Warriors poaching raid of playmaker Kodi Nikorima

The Warriors are targeting Kodi Nikorima to solve their playmaking crisis in a move that could end the Brisbane halfback’s career at the Broncos within weeks.

The Courier-Mail understands the Warriors will table a formal offer in the next 48 hours in a bombshell development for Nikorima as he prepares for Thursday night’s Broncos-Souths grudge match.

The clash at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium against his former coach Wayne Bennett could be Nikorima’s 87th and final game for the Broncos with Brisbane considering an immediate release to the Warriors.

The 25-year-old was first linked with a move to the Warriors last December.

Nikorima has been made aware of the Warriors’ poaching bid and would be devastated at the thought of leaving a Broncos club that has groomed him for the NRL since his teen years in Brisbane’s under-20s ranks.

The veteran of 13 Tests for New Zealand has consistently maintained he can succeed at halfback but the Broncos’ sluggish 2-5 start this season has not helped his prospects of being Brisbane’s long-term No.7.

Broncos coach Anthony Seibold is developing young halfbacks Sean O’Sullivan, Tom Dearden, Cory Paix and Tanah Boyd, raising the possibility Brisbane could send Nikorima back to the bench as a No.14 super-sub next season.

But Nikorima may not last that long at Red Hill if the injury-ravaged Warriors can get their man as soon as possible.

The Kiwi outfit have had their scrumbase decimated with Shaun Johnson’s off-season move to Cronulla compounded by a groin injury to his one-time halves partner Blake Green.

Such is their plight, the Warriors were forced to use back-rower Tohu Harris in the halves alongside four-game rookie Chanel Harris-Tavita in their Anzac Day clash against Melbourne last Thursday night.

Nikorima is contracted to the Broncos until the end of 2020 but the Warriors are keen to tempt him with a lucrative offer, potentially spanning three seasons beyond this year.

Warriors coach Steve Kearney worked with Nikorima as a former assistant at the Broncos and the pair share the same manager, the NRL’s most powerful agent Isaac Moses.

The Broncos were hoping the Milford-Nikorima alliance would work but the pint-sized pair have never really clicked since joining forces last season following Ben Hunt’s departure to the Dragons.

In the wake of Brisbane’s 29-6 defeat of Cronulla on Saturday night, Broncos prop Matt Lodge praised Nikorima, saying he is an NRL-quality halfback.

“All our forwards have trust in ‘Milf’ (Milford) to get the job done and Kodi is just as dangerous,” he said.

“I’d hate to be tackling him because he’s short and explosive.

“He can just break games open when we need points. Kodi is a threat. He’s just got to run the ball.”

Hope he shows up The Milf.

Always copping it from the panels on NRL 360 and Matty Johns
when it was The Milf out of form and not stepping up.

But at the same time,The Broncos have hit form as well since the move
and The Milf has taken responsibility since Kodi has come over.

Should be a beauty.

This opinion piece from stuff.co.nz says that SK is considering playing Kodi at hooker next season. Of course, there’s no direct quotes from the club or even information from anyone close to the club.

It also says Green is a lock-in at 6, even though he played every game last year in the 7 shirt :|

Also told us Hayze Perham was the frontrunner for the 7 jersey about the same time 12 months ago

7. Hayze Perham: This is the big one. Who fills Johnson's golden boots? Stuff understands Perham, the uncapped Rotorua Boys' product, has his nose in front at present and could well don the No 7 come round 1.

He is a clickbait specialist mate. Hes on here. Sees Warriors fans getting pissed off at Soward's Power Rankings so creates one straight away to cater for those fans putting up Warriors up high after one game. Then probably researches what power rankings is, and does not necessarily reflect standings esp early on the season and gives up after one week. Not another power ranking all year. His articles are a joke.

Can't argue their points too much. If CHT kicks on again next year he'll likely have to do what is best for the team and play dummy half.

Similar to the Jerome Hughes comment whether he is a fullback or half is Nikorima a half or hooker?
Kodi still has a lot of talent, including speed off the mark. The trouble is you cannot fly like an eagle if you mix with turkeys, and by that I mean the whole club from top to bottom right now...with a couple of exceptions.

Attack was pretty shit this year. It would of been a lot worse if he didn't arrive. He hasn't shown the pace he had early in his career. Not sure if that is due to injuries, being marked better, the positional change or not getting the platform to work off. The last one he won't get much of a platform here with our lack of grunt up front.

I'm a fun of the guy. But can see him being stuck between two positions. I'd love to see us pick up a few forwards to see him either causing havoc from dummy half or from half back. If we keep Eagan, Roache and Lawton we have enough depth there so he is likely to be looked at as a half. Hopefully the coach selects the halves on merit as Green, Nokorima and CHT would give us some competition for the two spots.

Interesting that Foxsports chose Nikorima as the Warrior who most needs to step up in 2020.
I find it about the most accurate piece of media on the Warriors in years. He either needs to go from nothing to being able to execute plays the 7 calls, plus RUN ball in both hands, draw the extra player, pass, to get the overlap for Fus etc, he cant kick and never will learn. Either all that or they better sign a better 5/8th soon and shop him, the same with Wade at hooker.

We need red zone penetration, cant do that with out a quality 7 and 6, you cant steal metres, get offside marker penalties and score barge over tries without a quality hooker.

As usual George talking sht "All In" and not replacing like for like players if hes going to keep releasing our best players. Boy CNK really made Boy George look like a Mug lost at sea in the world of Rugby League. NFI

There is the problem. He doesnt have half the skills required for 7, he has no game management skills as much as he wanted to be "the man" for Bronx, he doesnt have a kicking game. At 5/8th hes pretty meh every game. At least SJ when he wasnt creating magic and everyone said MIA, he was still performing the key functions of a 6. run, draw, pass, overlap on the wing, executing set plays as CALLED by the 7, not ignoring them like Kodi does.

That is why he was a bench warmer for the broncos and George after asking SJ to test the market got made a fool of when he left, much like when he released another super start in CNK, he has not replaced like for like with the players he released and Kodi was simply an OH F moment I just made a booboo, lets sign someone, anyone, so we paid major overs for Kodi.

So if he doesnt perform within the first quarter of the year, which I cant see happening as if you dont have the skills they just dont pop like magic, then we play our other 6s and shop Kodi

I disagree we would have been worse off without Kodi. It was Greens injury that caused the knee jerk reaction, because guess what, Boy George had released all the halves including our best one and CNK who can play half along with Lino etc.

So we had Harris, a second rower, playing 7 and CHT at 6. Instead we should have played CHT at 7 and ourI ISP 6 Hayze Perham, and we would have won 2 of the 4 games we lost that CHT nearly won for us, the Bunnies game we were up 14 points 10 mins to go and lost, blame the rest of the teams defense, the Storm game we had 4 mins to play but the ref called an absolute howler right in front of the posts on Papalii for crowding when he gave the player 1m to play the ball, yet you see people still holding onto players all year and dont get called.

So no, Kodi was not needed. What we needed was a quality CEO, for SJ to be in the team and CNK to be playing at Centre and we would have possiblye made the 4 coming off our 2018 run.

You do know Cameron George is the CEO right? He is not the recruitment officer, head of football, coach or assistant coach. His role in signing players is probably limited to asking those others if they support any decision to get a player and making sure there is enough money to pay for them
Anyway the jury is still out on Kodi for me but bench utility would be my pick.
But back on track = Hayze obviously has some special skills, Roger has FB sewn up so I would be playing him at Centre or 5/8. Pick one and make him make it his own, no moving him round to fit a team.
