Former Vodafone Warriors winger Francis Meli helped his St Helens side to a hard-fought 13-4 home win over the Leeds Rhinos in the English Super League on Saturday morning.
The ex-Kiwi scored the only try of the second half as Saints protected and eventually extended their slender 6-4 halftime lead.
For so long, Meli had Henry Fa'afili as a fellow winger at the Vodafone Warriors. In this latest round of Super League matches, Fa'afili also profited with three tries in Warrington's 46-24 comeback win over Hull FC. The Wolves lost each of their first two matches this season and were 24-18 behind at halftime.
The Wigan Warriors also arrested a poor start to the season. After losses to Les Catalans Dragons and Leeds, they were largely untroubled in beating the Huddersfield Giants 36-20. Among Wigan's try scorers were former Vodafone Warriors prop Iafeta Paleaaesina and back rower Harrison Hansen, son of long-time Auckland forward Shane Hansen.
The Warriors should have won by more, managing just six points in the second half after leading 30-4 at the break.
The Wakefield Wildcats also collected their first win of the campaign. With Kiwis Monty Betham and David Solomona in their pack, the Wildcats punished the Harlequins in London 26-6. Ex-Vodafone Warriors prop Mark Tookey scored the only try for the losers.
There was nothing unusual about Bradford's clash with Salford. The Bulls, the 2005 champions, picked the Reds apart with a 34-4 win, Kiwi and ex-Vodafone Warrior Shontayne Hape one of their try scorers.
Les Catalans take on Castlelford early on Monday morning when the French side will be without Kiwi legend Stacey Jones.
