Ericsson Stadium reverts to Mt Smart
Wednesday, July 12, 2006 - 7:48 AM

The New Zealand Warriors' rugby league ground has had a name change, reverting from Ericsson Stadium to Mt Smart Stadium.

The venue, which will also be used by Counties-Manukau in the Air New Zealand Cup provincial rugby competition, has reverted to its original name.

Auckland Regional Council chairman Mike Lee said Ericsson, which had moved out of the retail cellphone market in New Zealand, had decided not to renew its contract.

Other offers were considered, but the council felt they did not suit.

"I personally was more than happy to go back to its true name of Mt Smart," he said.

"Mt Smart is and old and well-remembered name and it gained international renown during the 1990 Commonwealth Games."

Lee said the council was not actively pursuing a sponsor to replace Ericsson.

"But given the issue of rates, we are obliged to listen seriously to any applicant who is interested."

The venue, the main arena of which was once used for athletics, was renamed Ericsson Stadium when the Warriors entered Australia's National Rugby League in 1995.

Aah well, at least it's back to it's original name. I don't mind either way. It could have been named something totally outrageous.
When I was at school and growing up I'd known it as Mt Smart. Then when it's named was changed to Ericsson; I actually liked it and now that it's gone back to the old name...well I don't know doesn't have the same feeling. haha. I'll probably still call it Ericsson for a while; may take some time for the old name to grow on me for a while :p

I remember going there to watch the Commonwealth Games in 1990. I was only 8, so it's probably not surprising that my most vivid memory of the event was riding home on a bendy bus! Lol!
