Kiwis halfback hero Stacey Jones has been named captain of his new Super League club Catalans Dragons.

Jones - who joined the French club last week - starred for the Kiwis in the 24-0 victory over the Kangaroos at Elland Road Stadium in Leeds in November.

The 29-year old former Golden Boot winner will lead his new team out for the first time in their friendly pre-season clash against Harlequins - formerly London Broncos - next Saturday.

Catalans chief executive Grant Mayor admitted it wasn't a hard choice to make.

"Stacey is one of the world's best players and has captained his country. He has had so much success in the game and commands so much respect," he said.

"When you look at the big challenge which faces us we need the right leader and Stacey will be an excellent mentor for the kids."

Geez, I hope he's done a crash course in French. Then again, I guess a bunch of his team-mates are English speaking and or can speak it well enough. He can also communicate with the refs a bit easier too.

Good luck to him, I hope the Dragons make a real impact on the ESL.

Looking forward to watching him play in the ESL.
Good on the club for giving him such a great honour as to lead his new side in their first year in Super League.

Seems like the most logical choice to me especially from a publicity and club profile perspective.

Good on him. I sure hope this new chapter of his career allows him to shine brighter than ever before, rather than slowly fade away.

Captaincy For Jones At New Club

From the official website of the Vodafone Warriors, www.warriors.co.nz:

Captaincy For Jones At New Club

Vodafone Warriors great Stacey Jones has been handed the captaincy at his new English Super League club Les Catalans.

Announcing the decision near Perpignan, club president Bernard Guasch said the decision was unanimous among the coaching staff and was well-supported by the players.

Jones, fresh after his return from New Zealand on Monday, is looking forward to his new position and has talked of his pride to be the first-ever Catalans Dragons leader.

“As a player you never expect this honour but now I have had some time to think about what this means, I am extremely proud to lead the team into the first season in the English Super League," he said.

"They are all a great bunch of guys and with so much experience around me, I am sure that this team will develop in to a very competitive one."

Club CEO Grant Mayer said that “while the decision was not automatic due to the high calibre of candidates, it was certainly made very easy due to Stacey's high standing in the game and his proven success in the role at both club and international level".

"It is a great day for the club and, I'm sure it's very satisfying for Stacey,†he said.

Jones will lead the team for the first time in the home trial against the Harlequins (formerly the London Broncos) in St Esteve on January 21.

Hope as many of the Superleague games as possible will be on TV so that we can follow Stacey's progress.
