General Johnson to Sevens and the Olympics

Kalcod

Normal breakfast routine, coffee and listen to Vietchy.

Latest rumour/story is Shuan Johnson being touted as moving to rugby sevens and getting into the Olympics.

Just a rumour or something in it? If true, should he dropped now and the Warrior develop or import another halfback?

Saw that come through on twitter so tuned in. Thought it was a wind up but then they had Gordon Tietjens on . Maybe something in it.
Rugby Union must be loving this week, put he boot in with this jem while the Warriors supporters are down

hell hope not, 7evens is so boring and I thought they dropped 7s at the Olympics, anyway hope Johnson's bigger then that and wants to be in a Grand Final winning Warriors team.

Just on Radio Sport

Gordon Tietjens said he would make a great 7's player but he would have to sign for rugby fulltime and start with an ITM Cup Side.

If his mind is on Olympic Gold after only 18 months in the Nrl then lets get someone in the 7 jersey that thinks and breathes rugby league, its not like he had a stellar season here anyway.

I certainly don't think Johnson would turn his back on league. with the new tv deal his potential to earn in league has just gone above and beyond anything NZ rugby can offer.
Benji, Johnson, SBW. would certainly be good players to have available even if they are playing league.
The NZRU would be foolish not to look at it for a one off.

Really? you'd cast him aside because he has a thought about Olympic gold in 4 years.. ridiculous.

Heard both interviews this morning, by the sounds of it I though it sounded like it would only be a sabatical type deal (6 - 9 mths away from league) to play a few games on the sevens circuit and if he succeeds there then they would seriously consider him (or any other cross code player) for Rio... But this is 4 years away so its nothing Id get too worried about at this stage

I reckon he would be a natural at table-tennis ( also known as ping-pong ) too, shit he could bring home 2 gold medals

The way Ramsey Tomokino & Gordon Tietjens were talking about this morning it sounded more than just a bullshit story, sounded as though Johnson had been thinking about it for a wee while

It would make him a better player.

He's suited to it , he would get all that adulation and confidence from winning.

A year of sevens under the top coach would teach the guy things.

I don't know anything about rugby, but from what I've seen lately they are making very very good athletes

Australia's 7's coach is Michael O'Connor, former Wallaby,Manly and NSW league player. Les Kiss is also involved in union coaching as well as Phil Blake. No doubt these guys will have an influence in enticing leaguies to union because of the olympics. Excuse me for I can not remember the source but I read they have mentioned guys like Slater,Barba and Inglis as potential 7's players so it doesn't surprise me that Johnson is being mentioned as a potential 7's player. NZRU will soon be contracting players for 7's only, this means they won't have to play 15's.
