General Homelessness in Auckland

That's the end of the story? I thought you were going to give her your quarter pack and drive away like a legend, or at least ask if she wanted your fries
yes of course.

That is a very good question and I thought about it at the time.

However we were already in a queue and I wasn't about to stop the car, and unpack some chicken without anything to put it into.

Next time (I rarely go there) I would order a small pack and give it to her...but...would that cause a chain reaction?

Overseas beggars are a dime a dozen, I just ignored them like everybody else did. Many were just plants for organised gangs anyway.

Here I always chip in for buskers, no matter how bad they are. At least they are doing something to earn their money.

Anyway, call me a sucker, but this old lady had a genuine dignity about her, unlike many of these people.

...and some of you bastards are really heartless

Just gotta say

A couple pf intersections near me usually have beggars wandering around asking for money.

I know they will all be on the dole, and probably in some form of emergency accommodation. They just need some cash to pay for booze or meth. So I have little trouble ignoring them.

However tonight the missus wanted KFC which I hate anyway. So we went to the drive through.

As we drove out, with more KFC than I could eat, there was this hard up Maori lady asking for a donation, of anything.

I don't carry any cash so just smiled as I drove by.

She thanked me anyway and wished me a good day.

She seemed to be a really nice person, older and definitely on the wrong side of luck.

I really found it difficult to ignore her, and if I had any cash I would have given her some.

WTF is this city coming to?

On the shore where I am there are two professional beggars at my local dairy.

Young White female with an Ipod and an Elderly maori male, diversity is a thing in begging. I know them both, they have mental illnesses and learned begging in the Mental health system.

Three white well dress kids with skateboards hit me up at the same shops for money for chippies. I happened to have a bag of crisps on me so I gave it to them even though none of them were under fed.

Begging is a norm now.

Easy to tell who needs charity, they look like shit, give them whatever you can spare coz their lives are the worst.

Unfortunately there’s no way to tell the legitimacy of these stories and it’s not beyond some people to know what buttons to push.
I’m in the same boat with you with buskers and window washers, at least their willing to try something to earn.
A good indicator of legitimacy is if they get angry or refuse a food offer and just want money.
I remember a guy on the train who gave a good speech about just needing a hand up and a safe place to stay etc, I fell for it and gave money at the time- later on I’ve come across half a dozen people with the same word for word script

I can't see any dignity in begging. There is no need for it in this country.
Beggars piss me off. Rather than bailing me up with the recited bullshit, they should make the same effort going around businesses asking for work. Oh, I forgot, that would require an effort and routine and the end of the dole.

Fair comment.
I have had some small dealings wit homeless people going way back last century.
Many are helpless as well as homeless. They just lack basic life skills.
Many are just useless bastards spaced out on meth and other substances.
I don't know the answer.

The only ones that have an excuse are those suffering mental illness. Pity that Carrington, Oakley, Kingseat etc closed. Those people can't manage their lives without safe and secure surroundings and compassionate care.

There are many and varied reasons why some live on the street and all need support

Can I encourage you to help them but supporting my wife and I on our sponsored walk?

So far we have $2,627 in support - care to add to it?

Dignity... if they have chronic schizophrenia or something like that, they're always going to be on the dole aren't they. If they're trying to supplement that pittance by begging their dignity is usually long gone.

Theres a guy down the road on Ti Rakau/Pakuranga Bridge intersection who doesn't even bother trying to wash windows. Just goes around with a cup begging. I guess he cant be arrested cause he's not washing. He's been there 3 weeks now so it must be lucrative enough for him to continue. I know some window washers were making a couple thousand a day on some intersections.

I come across a few beggars around here. Always the same people at the same shops. Some are very polite but most get quite aggressive and will cuss you out when you decline to give them a cent.

Its not as bad as it use to be because the emergency housing system has taken most in but when I use to volunteer at the Barry Curtis carpark it was heartbreaking to see whole families living in their cars in the middle of winter. A good 30 cars every night.

If you really want to see the state of it go to the Auckland Mission anytime after midnight and you will see between 5-15 people sleeping rough outside waiting for the place to open so they can get breakfast and maybe have a hot shower. Most are lovely people who will happily talk to you but none want your sympathy but still need the basics like a good meal and a warm place to sleep. There are certain carparks, parks, bridges and even cemeteries in town where you will find many others hanging out and getting ready to hunker down for the night. Almost all will happily accept a hot meal and drink...

I am not a psychologist, but what went on at Oakley and Kingseat in the name of psychiatric care was just beyond description , disgusting does not do it.

They are clearly better off in the community, but they need much better support than is available.

Actually I was just talking to a buddy suffering from depression this week, the black dog is heavy on his back this time. This who suffer it know what I mean. The support for those people is basically take meds or else, which I think is insufficient....but WTF would I know.

No doubt some it was bad. What we did have was the facilities, land and buildings.

I commend you and your wife for your efforts but its not a charity I would support.
We support a charity here, animal rescue.
20 years ago is was involved in getting access to bedsit units in the CBD to provide for the homeless single men. It was a failed social experiment and most ended up being evicted after a short stay back onto the streets. I understand the face of homelessness has changed and now its entire families.

You must be a youngster.
They weren't Auschwitz, thankfully, but it was a serious and very cruel breach of human rights regardless.
You could always tell the patients from the staff, the patients looked more normal.

Yes, but we are talking about homelessness and those with mental health problems. At least those places provided a roof over their heads.
