I'm a staunch labour voter, and i know we are going to be wiped off the map this election.one saving grace is Stephen smith the defence minister.he will be a good leader for the future for ALP.but in NZ the Labour Party as no leader in sight so another 6 years of jhon key(AKA the Donkey)or ass what ever you prefer

True.. Stephen Smith has been one of the few vthat has excelled during Australian Labour leadership.

I Personally think he is a great guy..Let down at this point of time.

Im hoping Labour at least retain some seats.

haha labour has nothing to offer the country and that is why they will lose...if people vote just for a 'leader' they are idiots. it is the party that runs the country not one person

Labour have alienated the middle classes with their talk of a capital gains tax. Such a policy needs substance so people can understand what it means to them, as nobody is going to vote for a party which is going to introduce a new tax on either their investments or their bach.

The thing is that the IRD already has the ability to tax the capital gain on investment properties - but they either aren't enforcing the rules properly and the current rules are to easy to get around by using either a smart tax lawyer or tax accountant.

Of more concern should be the Greens 'desire' to reduce the value of all property by up to 70% over a number of years in an attempt to make housing more affordable for new home buyers. Great for new buyers, not so for the person with a mortgage of $250,000 on their $350,000 house in Manurewa when the value of the house drops to $105,000 but they still owe the bank $250,000. New home buyers will really be helped into the market with all the mortgagee sales caused by the Greens policy - until the housing market falls even further and they lose their house as well.

Not so good too for people who thought they would treat their house as their retirement funds by shifting to a cheaper house in a different area and live on the difference in their old age. Sorry, but your retirement nest egg of $100K is now only $30K.

To help people they then want to use an economic strategy called "quantative easing" (QE) in order to bring down the New Zealand dollar - except it has one huge nasty side effect, done too much, it causes excessive inflation and possibly, hyper-inflation. You thought things cost a lot now, just wait if that every hits. Warren Buffet is warning that the States may soon suffer from it due to the QE used over there, and the Greens are talking of using a far more radical version in NZ.

Qualitative easing has been used in the US and the UK and has decimated their economies.

I think that capital gains tax on property is currently only applied if you are buying and selling property for gains, rather than selling the occasional long-term rental?
