General Few Warriors spots left

The Warriors have nailed down 19 of the 25 spots in next year's NRL squad and are about to test the market once the June 30 anti-tampering deadline passes.

Vacancies exist at fullback, prop, wing, second row and for a hooker-utility and a centre-wing - although half of these might already have been decided.

The list of 25 comprises the club's top 25 earners but they can use players outside this list in much the same way Patrick Ah Van and Sam Rapira have stepped up to the first-team squad this year.

Although the Warriors signed 16-year-old prop Russell Packer on Friday, they are undecided about whether he will be among the chosen 25 considering he's unlikely to feature in the first team next year.

And they have until Friday to decide the futures of Awen Guttenbeil, Epalahame Lauaki, George Gatis, Cooper Vuna and George Tuakura.

Leeds-bound fullback Brent Webb looks set to be replaced by Parramatta's Wade McKinnon, while 31-year-old prop Tuakura is not expected to be retained, considering he hasn't figured this year. Although only 19 and with great pace, Vuna's future is also in doubt after failing to light up this year's Bartercard Cup.

Gatis was initially brought in for one season but Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah said they had an option to re-sign him and he expected a "pretty positive outcome".

One area of particular interest is the second row, where Guttenbeil and Lauaki are vying for new contracts. If Guttenbeil decides to leave the Warriors after 11 seasons - and he has been given permission to speak to NRL and UK clubs - it would make a decision easier on the make-up of the second row.

Lauaki has missed most of this season with a shoulder injury and Scurrah said they would assess the injury right up until Friday, although they remain keen on the 22-year-old. "One signing that may or may not occur could change our position on that," Scurrah said.

"We are in quite a good position in terms of the amount of players we have secured and we have pretty strong thoughts about others. There might well be one or two spots we are going to wait and see on and test the market."

The number and quality of players still not signed for 2007 across the NRL is something of a surprise, given that the Gold Coast Titans, set to become the NRL's 16th side, already have 15 names on their squad list.

As many as 20 representative players will become free agents on July 1 and, for example, as many as 14 of Ricky Stuart's Roosters squad have yet to finalise their futures.

Looks like these players will be gone: Webb, Tuakura
Possible goners: Vuna, Guttenbeil, Lauaki
Probably staying: Gatis

I hope we sign gatis!

Unsure why they would want to get rid of Vuna unless they have a signing on the way. He has not really been given a chance this year, apart from the trial game vs. Raiders where he scored a great try. His form that I have seen in the BC Cup has been good infact I was surprised that Ah Van got the call up ahead of Cooper.

yeah vuna is interesting one but maybe he is just unlucky with ah van and vatuvei perfoming so well. hopefully gatis gets signed up as I think he is a good hooker that really adds to the club. seems like there will be quite a few players coming onto market once the deadline passes.

I certainly hope we have signed Wade McKinnon to replace Webb

Hame would be a good replacement for awen, if hes injury is too risky in the long term, sign one of the many decent forwards on the market. I'd sign hame he was showing some great form before the injury. Some other replacements for awen could be, hutch maiava, kylie leuluai(i rate him), mark minichello(creative), jacob lilyman, ben creagh, reese simmonds, micheal hendorson, justin poore would be as good or better than hame as a replacement for awen.

Maybe because we got Aidan Kirk and he can play centre as well and possibly wing.

After today i'd defenity keep awen, especially for only 100,000 on our cap lose hame if need be.

Yeah, but you've got to look at age. Guttenbeil might have only 1 or 2 years left in the tank but Lauaki's got a long career ahead and plenty of potential.

Dont be surprised if the Warriors draft highly touted centre miguel start into the 1st grade squad. Hes probably the highest rated prospect in the Allied Workforce Elite Development squad. Cleary said he was looking into the development ranks and he should fit well into the system.

lauki...gone
gatis...keep
although we may loose gutts and lauki(hopfully) there is so much depth in the back row... i for one is killing to see sonny fai in action. gutts i must agree has been unbelievable in the last few weks but it comes down to wat he i sasking for. with the 100,000 less i reckon we should keep him. now that webb, toopi and villa have gone we should sign mckinnon and the other signature they should put big is jake wabster. we lack centres and jake webser is a seriously underrated player who would fit well in the warriors side!

I don't think we lack centres, we've got Martin and Mannering and then guys like Vuna and Kirk coming next year, I think Webster would be more effective on the wing.

Yeah I guess depending on how Ah Van goes this year I wouldn't mind seeing Webster over here, especially that he can play Wing and Centre.

And we would be bringing another Kiwi home.

Your on the money FobinHood. Miguel Start looks certain to get the call up to the warriors squad. BRILLIANT YOUNG TALENT. Centre will be his postion for the taking.

Keep Lauaki, in this new enviorment he could be a superstar now .
