Potential new talent uncovered for pathways teams​

It was the players on show not the outcome that interested Sky Sport Future Warriors staff at Mount Smart Stadium on Saturday.
Pitted against each other in the early game before the NRL contest were teams representing the One New Zealand Warriors and the recently-formed Pasifika Aotearoa Collective.

The two organisations have forged a partnership designed to enhance pathways opportunities for young players dreaming of become One New Zealand Warriors NRL footballers.

The Warriors brought together a squad of under-17 players from their system while the Pasifika Aotearoa Collective selected a line-up of under-18 players.

The sheer size of many of the players was something to behold as were the skills displayed by many of them.

And that’s what enthused Andrew McFadden, the One New Zealand Warriors’ general manager recruitment, pathways and development. As he pointed out afterwards there were many positives to come out of the day including the special thrill the players had of wearing the Warriors’ colours.

It seemed in the opening moments that the Sky Sport Future Warriors, while younger, would be a cut above but the match proved to be more competitive than the early exchanges hinted at.

Indeed the Warriors duly won decisively 34-12 but the score-line told nothing of the resistance the PAC line-up put up in scoring three unconverted tries.

Warriors switch codes to play World Schools Sevens​

Rugby league will mix with rugby union when the Vodafone Warriors field a squad of players from their Sky Sport Future Warriors development programme in this weekend’s under-18 World Schools Sevens tournament at Bell Park in Pakuranga.

Coming into the event as late replacements they’ve had sparse preparation but have benefited from a crash course in the nuances of rugby union’s abbreviated game courtesy of All Blacks Sevens legend D J Forbes, who’s on the team’s coaching staff this weekend.

The opportunity to be involved in the tournament came about through the intervention of rugby league great Kevin Iro.
The former Vodafone Warriors centre heard a team had withdrawn from the tournament so he called his brother and Sky Sport Future

Warriors coach Tony to suggest the club might like to fill the vacancy.

With so few chances available to play football at the moment, the Warriors leapt at the chance despite the challenges of swapping codes for the weekend.

Playing as the New Zealand Warriors, they won’t be bereft of rugby union nous.

As well as having Forbes’ expertise on the coaching staff they also have some players fresh from playing First XV rugby union for their schools. Among that group is King’s College flanker Sebastian Su’a, son of former New Zealand Test cricketer Murphy Su’a.

The New Zealand Warriors are in Pool A. They play three pool games on Saturday against the Asian Dragons (10.10am), New Zealand Condors (11.30am) and Samoan Barbarians (2.50pm) followed by Cook Islands on Sunday (11.10am). The teams in Pool B are the New Zealand Barbarians, Tongan Barbarians, New Zealand Niue, New Zealand Fijians and New Zealand Cavaliers.

16S & 18S REPRESENTATIVE SIDES FINALISED FOR LABOUR DAY MATCHES​

The 2023 16s and 18s boys and girls representative fixtures boast an extreme amount of top talent from across the motu. New Zealand Rugby League is proud to announce the return of the Clubs vs Schools match-up as well as the return of Aotearoa Whaanui vs Auckland Invitational. This 16s clash puts the top talent from around Aotearoa up against the melting pot that is Tāmaki Makaurau, whilst the 18s Clubs vs Schools fixture is a combination of the best players from both the NZRL National Secondary Schools and National Youth Tournaments. All matches are set to take place at Auckland’s Bruce Pulman Park on Monday 23 October.

NZRL General Manager of Football & High-Performance Motu Tony stated, “Another successful year of the National Secondary Schools and NZRL National Youth Tournaments gave our rangatahi and rugby league community a fantastic opportunity to come together.

“The tournaments showcased the enormous talent we have playing and participating in rugby league, and our expanded female National Youth Tournament showed that the future of the Kiwi Ferns is bright and exciting.

“The efforts of those who performed exceptionally well in our tournaments have been recognised. They will get another opportunity to connect and compete with the rugby league talent throughout the motu.

I am excited about the talent we have that will compete in these fixtures and also proud that we can offer our young female players another representative opportunity.”
