General Feleti Mateo opts to chase State of Origin jersey

Warriors forward Feleti Mateo has chosen to chase State of Origin selection and give up his chance of playing for Tonga, New Zealand or England at the next world cup.

"I'm hoping that I can play some good footy leading into the selection of the city-country game and hopefully get a start in there and hopefully move onto New South Wales," Mateo told Radio Sport.

It is understood Mateo will be a certain selection for the Brad Fittler-coached City side, which will be named on April 15 for the annual clash with Country in Mudgee a week later, now that he has made a decision on his playing future.

However, if he is granted permission by the Rugby League International Federation to change allegiance in order to push for NSW selection, Mateo would likely have to play for Australia at next year's World Cup.

NSW Rugby League general manager Geoff Carr said, after going through a similar process with Mateo before the 2008 World Cup, the former Parramatta back-rower would not be considered for City selection until he formalised his eligibility.

''He has dual eligibility but it's up to him to put a letter into the RLIF to request a change of election from Tonga to Australia,'' Carr said.

''In 2008 we picked him in City-Country on the basis that he was going to change his election and, at the end of the day, he never, so we are not going to consider him for anything until he makes up his mind, which is his choice.

''He can change under the RLIF rules but it becomes difficult to keep changing, so he has to make up his mind what he wants to do and let us know.''

Mateo, who played for Tonga in the 2008 World Cup, also qualifies for England through his mother and will be eligible for New Zealand next year on residency grounds.

England coach Steve McNamara is in Australia and he confirmed Mateo was on a list of 40 NRL players eligible to play for the 2013 World Cup hosts.

However, McNamara said he'd want Mateo to show the same commitment to play for England as Wests Tigers lock Chris Heighington before he'd consider him for selection.

''Feleti is a class player, but it wouldn't be right for me to chase him to play for us,'' McNamara said. ''I want players to play for us, not for me to ask them to play for us.''

''It was Chris who contacted me about playing and we met up and he convinced me he wanted to play for us for the right reasons. But I'd love to hear from Feleti.''

Sad for Tonga indeed. But he's entitled to have a crack at green and gold.

Setting aside the patriotic side of the argument, a player of Mateo's talents, at some stage must wonder how they would go along side the top players in the game...on the international stage...

If Australia adopted a cynical approach to international footie ,players like Mateo could be picked for NSW, without intent to represent Australia ..... to keep the likes of England out of the picture, to a lesser degree Tonga...the depth available to them already is disproportionate in the forwards.

Mal Maninga seems to have this mindset of late , i hope the blues don't follow suit

Thats just stupid.
Hasn't he already played for Tonga? If so he should have to stick with tonga for the rest of his career, in my opinion.

Cant see it tbh. Barring the Parra game his form has been ordinary. Fell back into his old habits last week of throwing some ludicrous passes wouldn't have helped his cause, especially for S.O.O where possession is key.

He was the CAPTAIN of Tonga.

Australia / State of Origin does absolutly nothing to help international rugby league.

It's his decision at the end of the day, I just thought he would have been more loyal.

NSW selectors must be in a panic to pursue Mateo,Tony Williams suspended,Glenn Stewart & Greg Bird injured I guess they think their resources are that stretched, their selection processes & the international eligibility rules are a farce,I hope NSW gets another bashing.

Mateo won't make the Kangaroos squad when they have a healthy roster to choose from so once again the aussies have just shit all over the international game, sickening.

Good on him. He's going nowhere fast with Tonga so might as well make the most of all available opportunities
