Not sure how accurate but on Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, stuff reported that the bulldogs will only be paying close to half his salary for this year and next. If he does sign an extension with us surely the last two years would be at a reduced price?

Well obviously. We clearly won't be paying full price for him in the next couple years, it wouldn't just jump back to his overpaid salary when it extends beyond that. It would most likely stay the level we're prepared to pay currently.

But no one truly knows this stuff, only certain people in the club.

This is right, Despite whatever deal was done prior between the Bulldogs and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak the Warriors are saying this figure is what we believe Dallin is worth $............. you guys pay the rest if you want him off your books. Our figure won’t change in years 2 and 3 because we have already assessed his value up front.

How we choose to pay his contract over 3.5 years is where is can get murky.

This guy is class was good at the Panthers but wanted to play fullback. Playing for the Bulldogs has stifled his form.

A good young leader that can only add value to the Warriors. A good backup for Reece and he will have a point to prove.

It is how he fits into the team structure that will depend on how quickly he can prove his worth. Having him and Roger and Reece in the back line is mouth watering

That’s what I was thinking also.

It’s his 3rd gig here. Hopefully he comes with a chip on his shoulder and a point to prove.

I feel we’re lacking leadership and that spark/energy on the field. If he can bring these intangibles, then I think he can be a massive asset for us.

+90% in favour is a pretty overwhelming answer right there.

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak to join Warriors on three and a half year deal

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak will be with the Warriors through to the end of the 2024 season.

The Warriors have got their man, with Dallin Watene-Zelezniak’s move to the club agreed and the contract set to be signed.

Stuff understands that the deal has been struck for the Kiwis captain to join the club immediately, on a three and a half year deal, having been given an early release from his contract by the Bulldogs.

Watene-Zelezniak will join the Warriors through to the end of the 2024 season and is content to play winger at the club and allow Reece Walsh to be the team’s fullback.

However, if Walsh is unavailable for any game, Watene-Zelezniak would be a more than handy replacement.

The 25-year-old should be an outstanding player for the Warriors. Not only because of his exceptional talent, but also with his leadership qualities.

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak could replace Roger Tuivasa-Sheck as the face of the Warriors.

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak could replace Roger Tuivasa-Sheck as the face of the Warriors.

With Roger Tuivasa-Sheck moving on to rugby union at the end of the season, Watene-Zelezniak’s voice will be key in the years ahead and while it’s likely that Tohu Harris will be the club’s next captain, Watene-Zelezniak will also be an option.

There had been hope that the deal would be completed in time for Watene-Zelezniak to play against the Knights on Saturday. However, as he wasn’t named in the 21-man squad for the game on Tuesday, he’s not available.

The reason for the slight holdup was because the Bulldogs tried to limit the amount of money they’d have to pay Watene-Zelezniak while at the Warriors. Watene-Zelezniak was on $800,000 a season at the Bulldogs, and they’ll have to contribute at least half of that for next year and a similar ratio for the remainder of this season.

He is expected to play his first game for the club against the Dragons at Central Coast Stadium on July 2.

Watene-Zelezniak has been named on the Bulldogs’ extended bench for their game against the Eels on Sunday, but is almost certain not to play in that game now that his move to the Warriors has been confirmed.

In order for the Warriors to pick up Watene-Zelezniak, the Bulldogs needed to not only give him an early release from his contract, which was due to expire at the end of 2022, but also contribute significantly to his wages over the next season and a half.

Earlier this week the Warriors officially released Ken Maumalo to Wests Tigers, which triggered Watene-Zelezniak’s move to the club as when Tigers coach Michael Maguire, switched his attentions from Watene-Zelezniak to Maumalo, it gave the Warriors a clear path to go after Watene-Zelezniak.

He was immediately interested in making the switch, believing that the change could rejuvenate his career after a frustrating time at the Bulldogs.

Being on a long-term contract, Watene-Zelezniak could replace Roger Tuivasa-Sheck as the next face of the club and he will be an immense help to Walsh as he continues to find his feet in the NRL.

Watene-Zelezniak was born in Hamilton, but moved to Australia at the age of five. Despite growing up on the other side of the Tasman, his connections to New Zealand have stayed strong.

He is the great-grandson of Steve Watene, who was the first Māori to captain the Kiwis and then went on to become a member of parliament.

A bit weird that nothing official has come out yet. Even with his farewell post to the Bulldogs on Instagram no mention of the warriors. Would have thought they would officially announce it right after he posted the farewell

Would be such a warriors thing to find out he's actually signed with another club 🤣
Probably would be when you consider that Hiku, Ken, Turner are out for the year , with doubts around Fusitua.
Chuck into the mix that the next cab off the rank is Ed Kosi … basically a Fox player, so yes I’d say we need him.

Now confirmed:

Watene-Zelezniak's signing officially confirmed

Signing formalities have now been completed paving the way for New Zealand captain Dallin Watene-Zelezniak to join the Vodafone Warriors immediately on a deal through to the end of the 2024 NRL season.

Now in his eighth season, the 25-year-old Hamilton-born Watene-Zelezniak adds another level of experience and leadership to the Vodafone Warriors.

He’ll be available to make his debut in the club’s next match, their 16th-round encounter with the St George Illawarra Dragons at Central Coast Stadium in Gosford on Friday, July 2 following this weekend’s standalone Origin round.

“It’s great news for our club and a terrific signing having Dallin on board,” said Vodafone Warriors head coach Nathan Brown.

“He brings speed, leadership and experience into our young group and will be a major help to our developing younger players."

With a total of 143 appearances for Penrith and Canterbury Bankstown, Watene-Zelezniak will link up with the Vodafone Warriors in Terrigal on the Central Coast.

“It’s fantastic being able to bring the New Zealand captain into our squad,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George.

“He’s a highly-respected leader on and off the field and will be a major asset to our club and to the community.”

Thank fook for that.

In this Trumpian world I was getting tired of NZ media playing the fake news game....at least that is what is seemed like.

But like Trumps claims....they were wrong. The news was just telling how it is.

I needed a win for truth here....honestly if this had been all plaque I would have lost all interest in rumoured signings.

The only thing to confirm now is when is he coming (today apparently) who will play Wing....Roger of this guy.

I know lots of people will see that question as an outrage...but it is still a question until team naming tomorrow.

Obviously great timing for two reasons.

One we are missing a Winger.

Two we will be missing a fullback to Origin.

Massive upgrade on Ken at similar cost.

Lets hope the shift of clubs lifts him out of his years of form loss. Hard to do, but it has worked for Rhemus Smith and Marcelo Montoya.

There is hope.

It may help us to get Widdop even if that is a remote possibility.

Lodge is in the hands of the POS. What is said around the family bbq is what will happen there.

Oh yeah....and we badly needed to replace Kens Meters....unless we want to see Roger revert to type ++

These signings are vitally important in such a bad rebuild, you....well I...need extra incentives to look forward to watching games.

Nau mai haere mai.
