Television personality and environmentalist Steve Irwin has died in a marine accident in north Queensland, state government sources say.
It is understood Irwin, 44, was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest while swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas where he was filming an underwater documentary.
Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a fatality.
Irwin was known for his Animal Planet series The Crocodile Hunter, and is the director of the Australia Zoo in Queensland.
Irwin is survived by his wife Terri, daughter Bindi, and son Bob.

i think he would've enjoyed dying this way. not to be disrespectful, but he died doing something he loved - educating people about wildlife and the world we live in.

I haven't heard them, but I'm not surprised. I'm still quite blown away. His movie was screened on TV2 today in his honour.
And then, of course, there is Peter Perfect's death just four days later. Completely and utterly shocking. Clint Brown, (TV3's sports presenter), almost broke down when John Campbell interviewed him about Brock.
if there are jokes circulating about either of these gentlemens death it's a shame. whoever started them needs their disrespectful faces caved in. Steve Irwin was a great man.

Cruel and cheap jokes always surface whenever a celebrity dies. It`s the ugly side of human nature, unfortunately.
