Fine them by all means but leave them enough to pay for their quarantine on their return.Expensive trip .Just my thoughts anyway ;)
Suggestion for the MOH.... because of the person who recently tested positive after leaving the MQI facility and had passed both their COVID tests while in isolation, we should use these ones as an experiment to see if you can catch it while in quarantine for at least six weeks... all at their expense of course.

They were talking to a lady on RNZ checkpoint, I think, on Thursday who was travelling to Aus on the flight. She was openly saying she was planning to fly down to Melbourne via Sydney upon arrival. I don't believe she was challenged about this.
Maybe there was some miscommunication about what was allowed once in Aus.
It’s embarrassing as a NZer that there’s Kiwis openly flouting the rules -ON THE FIRST DAY.
Was hoping to get back to NZ soon but this shit is just gonna slow that down.
I think one of the things that some don’t understand is Aus states essentially operate as seperate countries within a country- especially at the moment, what these people are doing is pretty much the same as say illegally crossing the border from Mexico to US

Some good news.

We have been inundated by thousands of applicants for Medical and Nursing jobs from the US, UK, Aus, and Singapore.

Given the shortage of quality specialists and the constant loss of good staff this can only be a good thing.

Main reason for the flood in the case of the US is Covid, though high on the list is the political situation.

It is not good for these countries to lose good people, but for us it is swings and roundabouts and a welcome change.

I remember in the nineties my work offered an American Psychiatrist a new Car 375K and a free rental in Mission bay, big property, not a flat.

The American said he could not afford to loss of income and didnt take the job.

That will be one issue with trying to retain these people if they come. We will need to start paying health staff what they are worth, the way we do with teachers and cops.

We will have to stop treating them all as Florence Nightingales who can be swindled on the cheap by taking advantage of their vocational commitment to caring values.

NZ needs to decide just how many of a population it wants to be. There is massive opportunities being the safest country in the world and if trump is re elected the yanks will leave in droves, and even if he loses I’m convinced his radical supporters will go feral. A bad mix in a country that allows guns so accessible. Not that we want an influx of yanks but skilled workers amongst them may be valuable.

Good point. I'm sure there are heaps of qualified people with a good work ethic who would love to come here. The population is a problem though, look what we had during the Key years and the effect it has on infrastructure, housing etc especially in the cities.

Until we can cope with the influx we'll probably just meander along with a small net gain as immigration is now well and truly in the hands of the Govt.

What evidence is there that they were kiwis?

Might that not have been, or at least some of them, Aussies returning home?
If they were Australians coming home they would be able to return via the proper protocols, unlike NZers who are only entitled to be in NSW and NT at this point(when travelling from NZ). Seems otherwise odd that this happened the first day we were allowed to travel to Aus.
im travelling to SA next week and had to apply for a border pass-which was easy enough to do so again seems odd that this was done this way rather than the proper channels

A bit confusing reading the news over lunc had that they were not having the usual statement at 1pm about case numbers. Today they are have called a press conference.

A infectious disease but doesn't state if it is covid or not.

The Stuff app had a similar article. Their website now just has an article about a 1pm press conference to announce number of cases.

Typical news make it sound bigger and more mysterious than it is.

A new community case but they know the source and seems to be under control.

I think the person who tested positive could not have done anymore. He followed the procedure perfectly, well done, but lets hope when other cases arise people will respect that. Feeling unwell and a temperature means ...think what it might be and dont go the massive shopping malls or the catch up with mates and party on . Get Checked.

So the thinking is this case is linked to the Docks?

A much needed alert to the threat posed via shipping.

It probably helped this individual to take it seriously since port workers are now tested fortnightly.

They need to make testing weekly.

Yes he did as part of his work by the sounds.

They are chasing a specific ship to do the forensics.
So, I'm guessing here but what's the crew requirements at the ports. Are they allowed off or do they need to quarantine?

Would make sense that the medic onboard any vessel would have testing kits available and know whether the crew were infected.

Due to needing a lab analysis the testing will have to be done in port and by certified testers.

You raise a good point and it has worried me for a long time now with ships.

The ministry think the ship is a vessel now headed to Queensland.

Big problem with ships is with everyone couped in together you will get that slow spread long tail in some cases and therefore testing is very limited in it's ability to rule out some virus incubating or sitting on some surface on board.

Keeping an eye on Sweden after hearing rumours that the wave hitting Europe may push Sweden beyond even their liberal parameters around Covid management.

We will see in the coming days conclusively whether Sweden are forced to join the rest of the world.

Interesting times.
