We're a family of six. My partner and twins had it though the symptoms were almost non-existent for our twins but my partner had mild ones with one day being less mild. We all quarantined in the same household yet the other three never got it.

I work casually with a team of 30 contractors. I'm the only contractor in the group who has never contracted the virus.. Im also the only one from my extended friends.

I've concluded that I'm completely impervious to covid and have evolved a far superior immune system than the overwhelming majority of the human population. I have passed those superior genes onto half my offspring. I fear that if word got out about my insusceptible immune system I would be forced to offer myself to science much in the same way John Travolta's character in the movie Phenomenon was. So dont tell anyone.

That is all...
I thought the same as i was the only 1 of 2 out of my immediate family, brothers family and uncles family (bar my uncle) who never got. I had my young kids sleeping next to me when they had it coughing over me and still nothing and i was testing daily back then.
Then out of nowhere I got it this week. Started off with headache, then flu symptoms. Wasn't too bad but the worst part for me is the cough and throat is killing me.

Probably not superior immune system but a super hairy nose to filter out the bugs!

Are you sure it's not your genes its either your Warriors jersey collection or your shoe collection.

Maybe if we all wore that ugly bush jersey we'd scare covid away.

The Breakers can't travel to Perth for this week's game as 7 of the squad have C19
This a good reminder that even though the Warriors are finally home and life appears normal covid might not be done with us yet. Besides the break in 2020, the NRL has been lucky to get all of its games scheduled. A lot of discussions about penalties if they couldn't provide their 8 games a week.

International travel is back so that adds a risk back.

We are in another wave now so a good chance another would hit during the season.

Still seeing ridiculous media headlines like the Radio times pod "No one is safe".

This of course refers to the newest iteration of Covid which I cannot be bothered looking into until body bags stack up in countries like ours (I am talking selfishly from a Kiwi pov here, we in my opinion need not fear the latest strain until death rates climb) any more than we fear any other version of Omicron since we are vaccinated.

China on the other hand is stunning. As in I am stunned at how they have miss managed this virus, failed to adjust to a post lock down world, and have left their citizens vulnerable.

Morons called us Authoritarian for our uber tight restrictions. But that was because they were too thick to understand that we had a vaccination plan and roll out time frame to deal with Covid, and I think even the stupidist person could agree our robust response to Covid when it did hit large was the best you could hope for.

In the mean time you see China having such a poor vaccine programme and one can only speculate that the failure is on multiple levels thanks to the weakness of an Authoritarian society.

Why aren't the Chinese getting vaccinated?

In no particular order: (ignore the numbering)

1. Not enough Chinese Vaccine. Bottom line China could force every citizen to have the Sino Vac. If they can force them to do all the other bullshit then they can force Jabs.

2. Poor decision to stick to Sino Vac, which is crap, and the people know it. Mainly because of Chinese pride and failure to give up on Sino Vac and use Pfizer Moderna Astra Zeneca etc.

3. Most Chinese citizens will suspect that President Xi did not use the shitty Sino Vac on himself, he would have had a Western top Vaxx.

4. No exit strategy from lockdowns and no mass public health response/vaccine drives.

Why should we care? Well I care if a million Chinese people die.

And if you are a selfish or racist prick and don't care....you should stop and consider what China really is right now....a petri dish of a billion poorly vaccinated people who may create super Covid.

Happy Chinese New Year.

The travel restrictions singling out the Chinese in some western countries is an interesting political situation.

Scientifically I see no reason to enforce testing on all Chinese arrivals.

Can anyone think of a good reason to test all Chinese specifically on arrival?

I get that they are plague spreaders right now...I get that they did this to everyone else and I get that they may be responsible for this pandemic....but can anyone think why they should be treated any different to anyone else right now?

To me it makes no sense in a world awash with Covid under this new viral age of endemic disease...

I think we’re looking at China through our current stage in the pandemic.

At one time most countries had opened up and we, like the Chinese tried to control it for to long. Everyone else said we were being over cautious and we, like the Chinese believed we were doing the best for our people.

It’s all just perspective.

Ultimately we, like the Chinese, kept restricting entry, using MIQ and mandating jobs for 6 months to long, AFTER everyone had the chance to be vaccinated. We were making decisions on fear, just like the Chinese have. We now have surges in case numbers and everyone shrugs rather than discussing how long the lock down will be.

A perfect example is Dvokovic being denied entry to Australia because he’s unvaccinated and 6 months later an Australian athlete playing cricket at the Commonwealth Games knowingly WITH covid. Or the Wellington protests about mandates and MIQ which the govt refused to engage in and within months they were removed. How fast our perspective can change!

It’s been terribly difficult choices for governments and as I’ve said right from the start, every country makes what they think is the right call for their people and we shouldn’t judge to harshly what others choose to do.

We should be taking an interest in what is happening in China. As with other times during the pandemic it will affect us.

Some of the supply chains have started to pick up pace again. But a lot of the worlds trade is made and shipped out of China. That also depends on how long things remain in their current state over there. At the moment the timing isn't bad as they typically slow down over the Chinese new year.

Now with how things are here in New Zealand I'm not sure what impact testing travellers from China would give. Basically stats on what strains are going around, waste water testing could provide that or testing on people that need a higher level of care. Or stats for the epidemiologists**.

Testing travellers would be like going back to 2020 before the first case arrived here. Basically preparation. How much would the public stomach if things went back towards restrictions? The law of diminishing returns would be at play.

** Was that spelt write. The spell checker didn't complain. If I can spell epidemiologist this pandemic has gone on for a while.

Lol yeah a couple of years ago we were all epidemiologists and virology experts with online degrees.

Id like to see a recap of all the conspiracy theories that didn't come true, covid camps, population culls etc. I still think the anti-mandate protests were mostly political astroturfing by the anti-Jacinda brigade and more sinister elements. Imagine getting triggered into a frenzy by someone asking you to be kind.

Not totally relatable - but an inside look as a foreigner in China during the early days of the pandemic.

I was in China when covid started and spent the first 18 moths of the virus there. Basically a lot of uneducated locals thought that we (foreigners) were bringing in the covid - due to how things were reported. E.g. 2 people from Ghana arrived with covid yesterday (the small print that most people didn't read is that those 2 people were Chinese nationals which wasn't stated in the main piece of the article. Therefore, people avoiding walking past you, or worst case not wanting to be in an elevator with you and spitting on the floor inside the building once the getting out of the elevator (This only happened once though). Then other things about not being allowed in some shopping malls or hotels.

We know a lot more about covid and although none of that behavior got to me...all you can do in manage your expectations and control your own behavior. If covid is the same strength as what we are already experiencing - then treating one country differently doesn't make sense. If the virus is a lot more dangerous - then our think tank needs to get together and make plans accordingly with overseas arrivals...maybe. However, having lockdowns in NZ will not be the answer (Unless the virus is stronger than it ever has been) - too many people have struggled mentally and financially.

While I have friends / colleagues that have been there the entirety - I was starting to entertain the possibility to go back for work - and one of my recruiters has said they are putting hiring on hold at the moment to see what is going to happen with the pandemic.... not sure what they are waiting to see though?

I think the anti-mandate protests were anti mandates - real people in the real world losing their careers/ livelihood and suffering real impacts. Real families suffering with bad rules around mandates, vaccination requirements, MIQ, access back into NZ, etc that have subsequently been ruled in breach of human rights. That’s why it was such a strong reaction and with such a broad cross section of protestors.

People affected by the covid decisions were extremely frustrated and rallied around a tangible outlet to channel their hurt. The PM caused it to escalate by not even acknowledging the underlying issue. Those not affected couldn’t see the pain behind the anger and unbelievably some bought into the likes of the ‘white supremesist’ propaganda.

I believe there were some sinister elements there but they were used as an excuse by a PM that wouldn’t front because she had completely lost control of the covid response.

Most world experts who have reviewed the global Covid response based off outcomes and individual countries vulnerabilities like the NZ health care system agree NZ did the right thing.

Too long according to your opinion.

You mean the faction who wanted to hang her and the journalists and cops were a convenient excuse? Who in their right mind would engage with those nuts?

Btw what did you think of that Web of Chaos doco Wiz, truth, propaganda, bit of both?

Those nuts? Like sir Russel Coutts? Dame Tariana Turia? Or on a personal level a local hairdresser we knew?

Come on mate, the majority of people were not nuts… over 3,000 people with many doctors, teachers, even police. Like all good PR they grabbed the worst example and spread disinformation and painted that it was typical!

Web of truth? Haven’t seen it. But AGAIN I’m triple vaxed, was an outspoken supporter for the first lockdown, wore a mask, etc. Just on a risk/reward basis I felt the cost to people exceeded the benefits towards the end of 2021.

Again probably because on a personal level when my father in law had a fall, was in hospital and passed away while an unresponsive system wouldn’t adjust and let us see him in an emergency situation (dispute medical letters pleading for an exemption) and wouldn’t let us in to a 10 person funeral despite us meeting all the criteria, which even the local mp agreed and tried to help but couldn’t get the system to respond… it was a fucked up time for those caught up in the system which most with a limited impact never experienced.

The protests were majority left leaning and female. The facts contrast the aggressive, far right wing story line pushed through the media. Ardern’s own supporters made up the majority of protesters that were turning against her…

‘On 21 February, Curia Market Research published the results of a poll surveying 312 protesters in Wellington between 19 and 20 February. 55% of the protesters identified as female while 45% identified as male.

In terms of voting patterns during the 2020 New Zealand general election, 29.8% of the protesters had voted for Labour; 15.9% for the Greens; 15.9% for National, 11.9% for ACT, 8.7% for the New Conservatives, 7.5% for Advance New Zealand; and 3.6% for the Maori Party.’

PS - in regards to them being a bunch of white supremisists: 27.2% identified as Maori; 4.2% as Asians, and 2.6% as Pacific Islanders

The stats highlight where the misinformation really was…

What was the confidence level for that poll? the margin of error?

Given that even election polls which are reported to have a confidence level of 95% have been shown to have an accuracy level of 60% what store can one place on a poll of 312

10% of the attendees would be a very good representation…

We are questioning reputable survey companies now? It was a well orchestrated PR hitjob to discredit the protesters done by the same people preaching about not falling for misinformation 😂

The question has to be could what happened on January 6th in America two years ago and what happened yesterday in Brazil, happen here in NZ if too much misinformation is gathered by the wrong people? I would hate to see it happen here, but it could.
