He was hit at 50kmh and thrown 6m through the air, yet 14-year-old Corey Murdoch was still able to tell the driver his home phone number.
The Invercargill youngster is the first to admit he is lucky.
Corey was left with grazes and bruising after he was hit by a four-wheel-drive in Elles Rd, near the intersection with Tramway Rd, on his way to school about 8.25am on Wednesday.
The Aurora College pupil said he could not remember the details of what happened.
"All I remember is going over to Elles Rd, then finding myself on the road with people all around me."
Corey's mother, Rozzy Murdoch, filled in the blanks.
Mrs Murdoch said the first she knew of what had happened to Corey was after getting a phone call from the driver of the vehicle.
"All he could tell me was he was alive," she said.
She later found out her son had given the man his home phone number.
Mrs Murdoch said she panicked and rushed straight to Southland Hospital.
"I was thinking head injuries, internal injuries – I didn't know what to expect."
While she arrived to find her son "trussed up with bandages everywhere", they were a precautionary measure, she said.
A nurse at the hospital, who witnessed the incident, told her she could not believe Corey had come through it so well.
"The nurse was expecting pretty severe injuries."
Her son was treated and discharged from hospital that day.
Mr Murdoch said the driver of the 4WD had since visited her son.
"He was really cut up. He was relieved to come down and find Corey talking," she said.
"I said 'it's an accident, I'm not blaming you'."
However, Mrs Murdoch said she believed her son's accident highlighted the need for a pedestrian crossing at that end of Elles Rd.
"Hundreds of kids cross there every day on their way to school. Corey was lucky. One day someone will be killed."
