I hope so too. How sharing this video can warrant a maximum sentence similar to manslaughter, child molesting, rape, bashing someone senseless is beyond me. I think sharing the video serves little purpose , but a criminal offence?
the way i interpreted the article, i think this places the video in the same category as child porn. So they probably use the same punishments without the sex register.

The largest ethnic murder in history was the 6 million Jews by the Nazi's and their supporters. There are many documentaries showing live footage of executions, gas chambers etc. Some execution sites and concentration camps have been preserved as a reminder to humanity. Perhaps this Govt should look to history before taking such draconian measures.

It is a deterrent to SHARING the video - Honestly what sort of decent human being would SHARE a video of 51 defenceless people being slaughtered & how could you possibly think a ban on this is anything but the right thing to do... Maybe show some compassion towards the families... I bet you would be in support if it was your family (or maybe even just white victims...)

Seriously I read your comment and my first thought is - What the Fuck....
my second thought is still what the fuck...

If this was your family being murdered on live stream, you would want the film footage being played on every ... Fuck honestly I cant even bother

I hope this doesnt affect anyone here.
In an informal show of hands well over 50% of the students at my school had seen the video. Well over. I am being very conservative at that number.

The issue is that young people are choosing to view the material without the capacity to make that decision in regard to the effects (which are considerable for many) it may have on them.

That is before you take into the account the respect that should be shown to the victims and their families. I sure as hell wouldn't want people viewing my last moments as I anticipated being gunned down and the aftermath. Or that the image of this was used for sick bastards around the world to feel victory and elation from watching it. Or that people may romanticize this to the point that it aids their journey towards violence and hate.

It is time that our society understood, once and for all, the impacts of their misuse of social media. We are seeing evidence of tangible damage to our students. It is time to start proving to people that when you spread harm from behind a screen, you are not anonymous, and you will be called to account via the law if necessary.

On that note,

DO NOT POST FOOTAGE OR LINKS TO THE VIDEO OR MANIFESTO IN THIS FORUM WHATSOEVER!
We do not want this forum censored by the NZ Government for us Kiwis still living here as well as wanting to show respect to the dead and their families. If you have a problem with this feel free to leave. There are plenty of other forums for this sort of thing.

Consider this your one and only warning...

Your post is offensive and racist. If you slow down and read what I said, I have not advocated the sharing of the video. I understand it has been uploaded to various sites over 1.5 million times , so that has already been done by those that live on social media. I do not do social media at all and have no interest in the video. The point I raised was the threat of a maximum 14 year jail term for sharing this video which is out of all proportion to crimes that carry the same maximum sentence. I compared the Nazi mass murders, many of which can be watched on Netflix, Sky and even national TV without the threat of imprisonment for 14 years.
A plea from the PM for people not to share it was probably enough. Maybe some other form of social media ban, I don't know.

What a stupid & insensitive point to even bother to raise at a time like this in the first place.

The full video has just been classified as objectionable by the chief censor. Meaning it is now illegal to view, posses or distribute the footage in any form.

The issue here is that there are a lot of fucked up people in this world who romanticise fucked up events like that because of the feelings they harbour. Without such a ruling the video would be posted again and again on such sites together with their own propoganda material to recruit more fucked up people. A blanket ruling avoids such issues. Im happy with that. If the options were to threaten upto 14 years imprisonment for anyone sharing such media or having an event like this happen again by triggering another fucked up individual to carry out such an attack, what would you choose as the better option? I know which one i would choose.

I don't see it like you do. I don't think the video would inspire anyone that wasn't already a murderer in waiting. It would disturb anyone else. I think radicalisation is a slower process than watching one video.

You still can't justify your racist comments.

So a murderer in waiting wouldn't be inspired and it would disturb anyone else. So what is the issue? This is not anything that anyone should view whether accidentally or not. How anyone could argue that there may be a place for this anywhere is beyond me.

Good thing you don't really do social media. She's a pretty bleak world in its dark corners. FACT is these types of videos are used all the time to recruit people. ISIS being one of the leaders at using social media to promote their ideals and recruit more people to fight their cause. The whole of silicon valley has joined forces to shut ISIS propaganda down and its had a marked effect on ISIS ability to get new members and generate more money.

Huge difference between a nutter and a murderer. If shutting it done at least in NZ stops one unstable person being inspired to slay 50 I'm all for it. You actually lose your own argument by admitting that the video has the potential to inspire anyone...

You do realise he was inspired by the Norwegian Terrorist, Anders Breivik right?

I regularly watch the History Channel, especially stuff about the Nazis. Why? Because for the life of me I still cannot quite figure out how such a civilised and orderly country as Germany caused so much death and destruction to the world in the 20th century.

Included in those docos are the mass murders by shooting of innocent Jewish people. That has put a lie to those who still claim that the Holocaust was a hoax. The films were taken by Nazis proud of what they were doing.

This idiot was proud of what he did, so captured it online. In years to come people might be interested in what happened.

Can somebody tell me the difference between that and the Nazi documentaries?

There has been a concerted effort by our government to stop the media from showing images, and from focusing on the killer.

I listened to an interesting discussion on Radio NZ National on the subject. The panel included the media guy that heads the media liason with the SIS.

The control of what the media in NZ has done to avoid stories that focus on the terrorist has been amazing. A case of deliberate government interference.

They made the point that our media had to be asked first before they agreed to this very state controlled coverage that we are getting here in NZ.

We know less about the facts in this case than any say non terrorist horror crimes that we have seen in the past.

It's interesting to note that the government met with zero objections from any NZ media organisation about the way this thing will be controlled, with the medias agreement.

They talked about the issue of the trial, and that it will be important that any image of this person in court should emphasize that he is a weak and unimportant person, therefore it is likely what he is allowed to wear, who the people seen in the images in the dock with him, will emphasize his insignificance.

Another aspect is that he is likely to be tried by a panel of Judges. Finding objective jurors will be impossible in NZ.

Our terrorism laws, are poorly tested, the only other case being where the SIS picked on the Uruwera Tuhoe and those laws proved to be a mess, not withstanding the fact that the Maori they targeted were not terrorist in the first place.

In a lot of ways it would be a lot better to apply criminal law. With the Terrorism laws you have to also prove why it was a terrorist act, which then lends this man a platform to preach.

Going back to the original point about sharing this stuff . . . it works against you in the long run . . .and even if you dont have sympathies for the victims, people still need to think about our national security and how that is impacted by the media platforms.

Already we worry about retaliation, the more this shit is empasized the more likley someones going to come along and target more New Zealanders, ones that they think fit a profile that is anti muslim for example.

Australia traditionally seeks to repatriate their jailed citizens, if NZ agrees, Australia will comply with the NZ courst imposed sentence (it is a voluntary understanding between partner nations).

Theres a good interview of Simon Bridges around how Paula Bennett was asked as the minister of police to make changes to the gun laws because "there will be a mass shooting" in 2015. Paula Bennet bowed to pressure from the gun lobby and only adopted seven changes, rejecting the ones that would have prevented the scale of this thing.

Bridges is such a weak human being didling over the changes right now disgusts me.

This is not the time for politician waffle and not committing to the prime minister outright.

Most Muslims are very worried that NZ's bureaucratic avoidance will see a slow response to the kinds of changes they need right now.

I cannot imagine mainstream NZ diddling if they were worrying this week that another nutter might go them again. Its a big releif to me that he is not in charge of this.
