Surging Parramatta has been dealt a major blow ahead of its clash with Brisbane on Sunday with news that captain Nathan Cayless will not play again this season.
Cayless suffered facial injuries in the Eels win - their ninth in a row - over Sydney on Sunday, and scans have now revealed that he has a fractured eye socket.
"Once the swelling subsides, a decision on whether he will need surgery will be made," a Parramatta club statement said of the New Zealand international.
"It is unlikely that Cayless will be available to play for the rest of the season."
Eels coach Jason Taylor, already dealing with injuries to front-rowers Aaron Cannings (shoulder), Adam Peek (jaw), Michael Vella (ankle), Justin Tsoulos (shoulder) and the suspension of Fuifui Moimoi, is not prepared to take chances with such a delicate injury.
"We are all feeling for Nathan at the moment, but with an injury to your eye you are not going to take any risks in terms of rushing your return," Taylor told AAP.
"We are preparing as if he won't be back on the field this year."
Only Vella and Moimoi, who can return only in the third week of finals, are expected back on the field this year of those sidelined.
The Eels face a tough task to make it 10 in a row against Brisbane, who dismantled the Bulldogs 30-0 last week. Josh Cordoba will likely replace Cayless with hooker Mark Riddell also likely to be used as a prop with Chad Robinson.
