I thought Id make a new thread instead of derailing the game thread more

Interesting to note watching the rugby, otago v waikato, that the commentators think the crowd is a bit quiet and disengaged.
A few of us commented on a bit of apathy regarding the warriors atm.

it seems to me that the common factor is these bye weeks and breaks in the competitions really killing their momentum. often the teams come back rusty with stop/start openings to games. the enthusiasm of supporters is effected by the team being out of sight and out of mind.

my answer.. ban byes

How else do you plan to balance the NRL season apart from having team play each home and away once (16 round regular season) or twice (32 round regular season)?

Byes dont exist just for kicks, theyre for a fucking reason.

i mentioned in the wrong post that i quite liked the international rugby season break.

It would be so much better in my opinion, if the origin series could be played over three stand-alone weekends. That way, each week, i will have a team to support. either kiwis, warriors or queensland. not like last weekend when i disengaged myself from league.

Just a thought, but for mine the international series was a success despite the opposition's performance.

true. it would require some changes. more teams and it becomes viable

With more teams coming into the comp, wont that stretch the season further? they are going to have to rework the competition anyway so that would be the best time to move SOO and the internationals out to the end of the season. And while Byes might be there for a reason, i wonder how many teams the comp will need before they become redundant. Already we only play 1 team (the bulldogs) only once in the regular season so it would be ok to fill those byes with the new teams, which means that some teams we get once and some we get twice

i dont mind the byes but i hate watching club games with stars missing. i'd like to see origin on a monday night stand alone weekend where every team gets the bye. but have a 7's or 9's comp with a major prize for incentive held at another city. so SOO in brisbane then 7's/9's in sydney. make it a carnival type atmosphere like wellington 7's. then friday night/sat/sun that comp then SOO monday night. stars can then back up with a decent break.
could also do a minor nation international weekend like png v fiji, samoa v tonga, maoris v aborigines, junior kiwis v aus etc with SOO on the monday and those games on weekend again in opposite state/city

I don't think your right about the Dogs being the only team we play once. Its not possible in a 26 week comp with 2 byes and 16 teams.

We play 24 games. There are 15 opponents. We have to have several teams we only play once. If my quick maths is right, we play 9 teams twice and 6 teams once.

Just checked and we play the following teams once only.

Eels
Bulldogs
Rabbitohs
Tigers
Knights
Dragons

his general line of thought is correct though. it doesnt really matter how many games are in the season, theyll play some teams once and some twice. but as long as everyone plays every week theyll all play the same number of games. therefore byes arent necessary

I agree with whoever said earlier that no team should get the automatic 2 points from the bye.

I prefer no byes. I hate when the season ends and would be happy with any idea that makes each season a bit longer. I would be happy for them to extend the season so each team played the others twice (30 weeks + finals). And if they add another 2 teams to the comp, I would be happy for them to add another four weeks (34 weeks + finals).

I realise the players can't handle too much more, but I'm thinking of my own enjoyment more than the players. If the teams need to increase their player pool so they can rest players during the season, I would not mind. As long as there wasn't a drop in intensity, any ideas that increase my access to quality rugby league are good.

I would also love to see a tournament such as the 1998 World Club Challenge or a 9s comp tacked on to the end of the season for the players who don't have representative footy obligations.

I would like to see the NRL uninterrupted by SOO or the ANZAC Test and with no byes, followed by a week off, followed by a full NRL vs ESL World Club Challenge and Intenational and SOO at the end of the season wrapping up just before Christmas and returning with a 9s comp in January before the players get 4 weeks off for pre-season training.

I personally don't think I'm asking too much of these guys, or being greedy and selfish. I just can't bear 3-4 months without my league fix.

I always thought that the NRL was, as a 16 team comp, split into 4 groups of 4 with each team playing the other 12 teams twice and the other 3 teams in their pool once, but maybe that's changed for this season.

I'm all in favour of either playing all 15 teams 1 or 15 teams twice. Obviously, 15 teams twice extends the season, so that's probably off the agenda.

The "play every team once" idea has the advantage of allowing more expansion - I'm not advocating expansion just for the hell of it, but it does allow for a greater level of expansion and a shorter season (which may negate the need for a bye) and stand-alone representative weekends.

State of Origin weekends could be Reserves Friday, Main Game Saturday for instance.

I think Wales gave the best value as the Northern Hemisphere team in the international window just gone. I had visions, with Scotland beating Australia, of Wales touching them up and they did pretty well but just not well enough.

The idea of breaking the Super 15 for this is good enough, but I'm not sure if the Northern Hemisphere would break their competition for the Southern Hemisphere sides and I think the break should have been a month or so earlier in the competition. Coming back into the Super 15 with only three rounds left feels a bit strange. That close to the end of the regular season why not finish it off?

I'm sure I read the draw was made with the teams in two pools based on where they finished the last regular season (I think it was odd numbered finish in pool A and even in pool B, for eg.).
Each team plays all teams in the opposite pool twice and their own pool once with the other games decided through teams giving prefered match-ups (one reason we almost always play Storm twice, as Warriors enjoy the rivalry and ratings theses games get) and the Heritage round pairings.

The bye weeks are always a drag for me. I loss interest in the team and the NRL in general. On the flip side you can't expect these guys to keep trucking on playing the toughest team sport in the world in the toughest league comp on the planet. The players do need a break.

Hooray hooray!!we are going too be actually, talking warriors football tonight other than other bits of trivial rubbish like we have been doing lately, because it's game day.its game day YUS!!
