Warriors On A Get Square Mission: Tate

From: https://www.nrl.com/News/Latest/NewsArticle/tabid/76/NewsId/4274/Default.aspx

Brisbane Test star Brent Tate fears New Zealand are on a "get square" mission after being handicapped in 2006 and missing out on the finals.

The Warriors started last season four points behind their rivals after being stripped of premiership points for salary cap breaches, ultimately keeping them out of the top eight.

This season they've flown out of the barriers and the efficiency with which they disposed of Parramatta last weekend has sent a warning to their rivals that 2007 could be payback time.

Tate has a private hotline to the Warriors through his brother-in-law and captain Steve Price, but the lines of communication have been down this week and will stay down until after Sunday's clash.

"I think last year they would have finished top five if they hadn't had those points taken off of them," said the Queensland and Australian three-quarter after training on Thursday.

"I think they're an even better side this year and things like what happened last year can drive you on."

The Warriors' pacey backs and smaller men stood out last week from their big forwards who generally take most of the kudos.

"Nothing much changes with the Warriors, they're always a tough side to beat," said Tate.

"It'll be a huge challenge for us with no Locky (Darren Lockyer) and them coming off such a big win against Parramatta."

Tate expects new halfback Karmichael Hunt, who was born in New Zealand, to rise to the challenge along with new five-eighth Shane Perry.

"K is the type of guy the more responsibility he's given the better he plays," said Tate.

"I know personally he'd be really looking forward to this game, especially over there."

"Shane is pretty experienced. He had that year with us last year and Karmichael is improving with every game.

"We'll will miss Locky, but it shouldn't be too much of a drama for us."

Perry, who played halfback in Brisbane's grand final win over Melbourne last October, has a huge job on his hands filling in for Lockyer who's reportedly making such a swift recovery from his ankle injury he could be back in two weeks time.

"It's a big loss not having Darren there and we'll all have to lift a bit," said Perry who missed selection for the opening round loss to the Cowboys.

"I've got to take a bit of responsibility this weekend and I'm looking forward to the challenge.

"I'll just play a similar role to what I've been doing in the past and try and compliment Karmichael.

"He (Hunt) is a great player. He's an exciting player and whatever position he plays he'd be good at, whether that's fullback or halfback, he can play anywhere on the field."

Lock Tonie Carroll missed training with a stomach virus but is expected to fly out with the 17-man squad on Friday.

This is from the tvnz.co.nz website

There's speculation the Warriors are looking at signing Broncos and Australian centre Brent Tate.

Tate comes off-contract with Brisbane after this year and it's unlikely they'll be able to retain his services. The Warriors aren't commenting on the move but they've indicated earlier in their year they'll look to sign a high quality outside back.

The Broncos are facing a difficult juggling act to try and retain all their high-profile players and Tate is one of them. Having Tate's brother-in-law Steve Price at the club may be a strong bargaining tool for the club.

Note- the only big question mark I have about this, is if the Broncos consider Tate one of their high-profile players. Then it is very likely he may have a pretty bigt asking price. How prepared are we to put an offer considering what he might be asking (in general terms)?

Well, his asking price would have to be high - he's a current Queensland and Kangaroo representative. Personally, I think he's probably worth every penny.

We might have to release Ruben but then with Rapira and Tuimavave waiting in the wings we should cope with that.

He's getting old. No retirement meal tickets at the Warriors please.

To be honest I think we should give a shot to Ropati, Mannering, Start and Mika before we go looking on the open market.

Start is a great prospect.

I'm still waiting for the day when I get to see Ropati and Mannering in the centres.

? He's only just turned 25. He could give us five to six years of service.

Holy shit really? Okay I was completely wrong on that call.. Still think he's no good tho. The ironing board problem can only get worse too.

I think we should get Tate ,Tony Carrol & Gaznier - more chins than a chinese phone book !!!But seriously the warriors are weak in the centres & Tate at 25 & being a current test player as Jesbass said would be worth every cent !!! But the Bronc's won't let go of him easily although i heard rumors Tate & even Berrigan were likely to go due to the cap.

Yeah, I thought he was a lot older, too. I had to look that one up, but he has been on the international scene for so long that it's easy to assume he's much older.

Its sad that Manu Vatuvei has scared him so much that he has given up and decided to join us to avoid big Manu.

Only early in the Broncos v Storm match and mega chin Tate has made some terrible blues already. Do we really want him?

LOL @ the big chin comment. I always thought Petro had the biggest chin in the NRL. *jokes*

Well to be honest, what players doesn't make mistakes? Frankly I'd probably rate guys like Gaz and Cooper slightly better centers then Tate but they won't be leaving the Dragons anytime soon...

Mannering is a better player than Tate, and i reckon i could name a dozen better players than Tate as well so theres plenty to pick from.
