General Australian Oscar Winner Steps Down As Rabbitohs Owner

League Freak

Russell Crowe has announced he will step down as an owner of the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

He has done a great job at turning the club around on an off the field. He has basically been the perfect owner and no doubt history will look on his time as an owner favorably.

I've actually written two articles about this:

Russel Crowe and Peter Holmes A Court Nothing Short Of The Rabbitohs Saviors:
https://www.leaguefreak.com/russell...-nothing-short-of-the-rabbitohs-saviors-3469/

George Piggins Plays The Bitter Old Man As Crowe And Holmes a Court Look Like Stars:
https://www.leaguefreak.com/george-...rowe-and-holmes-a-court-look-like-stars-3473/

Members of the club will have a say on what happens to the roughly 37% of the club Crowe owns which is good to hear.

Bitter blow for the Rabbits losing the influence of Crowe but it looks like he's doing it for the right reasons and will leave the club in much better health then he recieved it in. You dont see that often and its a refreshing change to see a club owe the owner instead of the other way round (Tainui anybody!). Great article on Russell Crowes contribution...

Looks like the club is in really good health which shows on the field. As much as you'd want the players to be professionals and carry on even when the clubhouse is in disarray, we all know thats not how it works when players are worried whether they'll get paid next week or not or whether the club will even be around. We dont expect them to be like the orchestra on the Titanic.

As for Piggins, the word senile does come to mind.

All in all, Im glad Russell got the club back fighting fit. There was far too much history there to go to waste. Sad that it took a Kiwi to do it but at least its done...

What I don't understand, because I haven't really been following it closely, is what Crowe and Holmes a Court did to turn the club into a profitable venture? And why the people running the club previously weren't able to do it? I understand they put up their own money to sign players, marketing etc etc..but was a cash injection really all the club needed to get back on track permanently? And now that he's gone...is it sustainable?

Been reading abit about the Newcastle situation. Apparently he has been late paying the stadium fees, hasnt paid super on the players wages and the office havent been paid on time? Losing money by the day. Taken to court because he cant pay a $AU28 million debt. 2010 he had an estimated worth of $AU1.2 billion! He still has other assests like the ports I think? Like the bunnies in the original thread, I dont really care. Eric Watson and Owen Glenn were doing fine last time I heard!

I'd take Uate in a flash. It would be nice to have a winger with speed.

But yeah, outside their coach I don't think we need anyone from them.

Akuila is as fast as Manu was afew years ago but they both have the same bumbling hands. No thanks.

I'd only take Jeremy Smith, Kevin Naiqama or the coach.

The Knights have $20 million in the bank and are insulated against any financial problems Tinkler is having. At worst they might lose Wayne Bennett but that is about it.

As for Souths, Crowe and Holmes a Court took the club from chook raffles to being a professional sporting organisation. They sold some property to bring more money to the club and streamlined its administration. Under its previous admin, well, they were so bad they got kicked out of the competition.

South Sydney are one of just two teams in the NRL to post a profit. With the new broadcasting deal on top of that, they are not anywhere near being in any financial trouble.

What's the other team? Broncos?

Yeah it must be the Broncos. Average crowds of around 30,000, Friday night games... they were the only club to post a profit last year.

Went to Warriors vs Brisbane in Brisbane a few years ago. Awesome stadium. If you have to make a trip away to see a game. This is the one

Yeah Broncos are the other one.

I agree on Suncorp Stadium. Ive been to a number of stadiums, been to Old Trafford too, and Suncorp leaves them all for dead.

The only thing I enjoy watching is Russell Crowe's sad facial expressions after every Rabbitoh loss to the Warriors hopefully get to see a few more before he departs

That was hilarious when he did that. The Rabbits were going off on the Roosters from memory and he gave the old thumbs down as a sign to put them to the sword!
