TĀMAKI KI TE TONGA CLAIM INAUGURAL SHAUN JOHNSON SHIELD​

The U16 Shaun Johnson Shield Grand Final put the two undefeated sides of Tāmaki ki te Tonga (South) and Tāmaki ki te Raki (North) against one another. Auckland South dominated and controlled the game early, eventually scoring through Sosaia Latu from a well-placed chip into the corner.

Tāmaki ki te Tonga kept the pressure on and Haami Loza scored himself an intercept try to take them out to an 8-nil lead. North got back into the game with a 40/20 giving them great field position, but the U16 South side put in a strong defensive effort to keep them from crossing the line. Sale Tatupu dotted over for South from close range to extend the lead 12-nil, but three missed conversions kept the North well and truly in the game.

Demetrius Kilisimasi lifted the hopes of North, breaking the South defensive line of the scrum to get points on the board in the corner. Ryder Williams slotted conversion from the sideline, bringing the score to 12-6 at the break.

South brought their first half momentum into the second half with Edward Pirika and Haami Loza extending the lead out to 20-6. In efforts of a comeback, North secured the short kick off, crossing the line soon after, but being called back for double movement. North’s Atelea Filo got the sought-after points for the side, but it ended up being too little too late as South secured the 20-12 win.

In Shaun Johnson’s absence, Auckland Rugby League Chair, Shane Price presented the U16 Shaun Johnson Shield to captain Augustino Filipo and the Tāmaki ki te Tonga (South) side.

Potential new talent uncovered for pathways teams​

It was the players on show not the outcome that interested Sky Sport Future Warriors staff at Mount Smart Stadium on Saturday.
Pitted against each other in the early game before the NRL contest were teams representing the One New Zealand Warriors and the recently-formed Pasifika Aotearoa Collective.

The two organisations have forged a partnership designed to enhance pathways opportunities for young players dreaming of become One New Zealand Warriors NRL footballers.

The Warriors brought together a squad of under-17 players from their system while the Pasifika Aotearoa Collective selected a line-up of under-18 players.

The sheer size of many of the players was something to behold as were the skills displayed by many of them.

And that’s what enthused Andrew McFadden, the One New Zealand Warriors’ general manager recruitment, pathways and development. As he pointed out afterwards there were many positives to come out of the day including the special thrill the players had of wearing the Warriors’ colours.

It seemed in the opening moments that the Sky Sport Future Warriors, while younger, would be a cut above but the match proved to be more competitive than the early exchanges hinted at.

Indeed the Warriors duly won decisively 34-12 but the score-line told nothing of the resistance the PAC line-up put up in scoring three unconverted tries.

Tāmaki ki te Tonga (South) 30 – 20 Waikato​

U16 Waikato came to play for a second week in a row putting in a strong first half performance to had into halftime with a lead against a Tāmaki ki te Tonga team coming off the bye. Down two tries, coach Ruka Loza rallied the team to a strong second half performance enabling them to return home with the win.

“Coming down to this new atmosphere, most of the boys haven’t moved out their safe space in Auckland” captain Augustino Filipo said. “It was exciting even though we missed out on a first up game due to the bye week.”

“We came into the first half, and it was pretty sloppy, nothing was connecting and basically, we were just a one-off team. When we came into halftime down two tries, coach Ruka told us what we needed to do, what we can work on. Just glad that we got the win.”

Waikato captain, Mangaroa Mark spoke on the opportunity to be a part of the inaugural U16 Shaun Johnson Shield and commented that it was good for players to come together after not playing for a while. “It was good to get together, these Auckland sides are tough, but it’s always good to play against the best.”

The Mole: Warriors win tug-of-war for hottest teen prospect in New Zealand​

The Warriors have won a tug-of-war battle with rugby union over one of the hottest teenage prospects in New Zealand.

Augustino Filipo, who was recently named 2022 NZRL U16's Boys Domestic Player of the Year, is 17 this year and has been blitzing all comers in both league and union.

But the youngster has decided to pledge his allegiance to league - and the Warriors - in a major coup for the club in its long-running war with the 15-a-side game.

"I play lock, second row and centre for league and lock and flanker for union," Filipo told Wide World of Sports.

"The Warriors have been good to me and I hope to be playing in the SG Ball Cup this season."

Last season, Filipo played for Niue under 18s in the Pacific Youth Cup, standing out despite being two years younger than many of his team-mates and opponents.

The De La Salle College student also shone in the Shaun Johnson Cup and Warriors officials couldn't hide their delight when he decided to commit to the club.
