Sports Auckland 2024 A-League Team

Football has been the dominant sport in my region for 10 years now. It's not exactly the demographic you'd expect either with low incomes and a lot of social problems.

Parents don't want their young ones getting smashed anymore.
Yeah my wife switched my son from rugby at a young age

He’s now in the first XI and we’ve seen a noticeable rise in the crowd numbers compared to prior years

With the World Cup and now Auckland winning the A league rugby is under serious threat from football
I think A league is always going to struggle with the fact that this is equvlent to EFL league one/two in england. So unlike rugby league/union you'll never be watching the best play. You see the exact same stuff in the US. Far, far more kids play football (Soccer) over there too but a lot more people still watch NFL. Where the MLS gets 100-300k viewers per match, NFL is still getting 18.7m.

Plus a-league is especially ham-strung as you'll never see a generational talent stick around. They'll either get pouched when young, so you'll just never see them live. Or they'll be pouched after a few great games. There biggest compititor will never be another sport. It's the Premier League.

Although in saying that, super rugby is very good at shooting itself in the foot. So it would not surprise me if super rugby doesn't stop being a old boys retirement village, a-league over takes them.

Awesome effort. Let's hope we can do it this year. It would be like pulling off the double.

The Warriors winning the NRL and the Kiwis winning the World Cup is pulling off the double.

A Wahs win after Auckland FC winning is more like you winning the powerball (Wahs) after already winning the raffle for the meat pack at the local footy club (Auckland FC).

Congrats to Auckland FC. Great to see them doing so well since they entered the comp. Yet to watch one of their games yet though.

IMO the NRL is the pinnacle of Aus/NZ pro sports comp but winning the A league comp in their second year(?) Is still an awesome achievement. Best wishes to them and their fans.

Question - since they play at Mt Smart, do they have many fans that support both Auckland FC and Warriors and attend both their games?

Im not sure if it’s common knowledge but Auckland FC do have a salary cap dispensation for being the new franchise. The problem in A league is after 2 years when the dispensation falls off teams fall off too (wanderers and MU have had this issue)

Wanderers won it in their first year?

I dont think they won the grand final but did win the league.

Auckland did good, hopefully they can keep the momentum going will be an interesting watch the next couple of years

The question is how can they capitalise on this achievement?

If I was the owner, who has deep pockets, i would make the game free to air so the average Joe Bloggs can watch next season. Build a following among the masses.

I would also give youth discounts to the academy clubs (20%?) because it’s the kids who are the future.

Maybe even provide sponsorship to the schools and invest in the school leagues

As with every sport it’s $$$ that talks

There were quite a few warriors jerseys in the crowd watching the tv coverage.

Their membership is quite a bit more expensive than the warriors. I find that pretty interesting…

I get that and was thinking when I wrote it someone likely would understand what I meant.

More getting at when a team in a city wins a big comp followed by another one. You will see in the media or a bit of a narrative about the vibe of the city having success.
