General Asi vs CHT Thread

I said ignoring the field goals.

So how is that not close? Those stats look bang on even.

That's also not taking into account all Shaun Johnson's set play fuck ups that absolutely kill momentum with passes at the bootlaces etc. He's been clunky in most of the games played.

I'm not hating on him, it's just my opinion that (outside of those buzzer beaters) Chanel Harris-Tavita has been better. And you can't "objectively" say otherwise.

Haha dude I’m with you, I said that I also think that Chanel has been playing well.

Just pointing out that even though Shaun Johnson has looked clunky and not his usual self, his attacking stats show that he has had more impact on our team than Chanel Harris-Tavita has.

A lot of it is perceptional bias. Basically Chanel Harris-Tavita playing better than Most of us expected will generally look better than Shaun Johnson playing below what many expected.
Don’t think Shaun Johnson is deserving of the hate he’s been copping- he’s not the highlight reel player he once was but is providing us with a much better platform than we have had in previous years, many forget he’s on a fraction of the pay he was previously on for us, I’m happy with what we’ve been getting from both of them. ASI potentially becoming another option is a good thing also

For sure, I'm not hating on him at all. There's no real grounds for that when he's on about half the salary he was on when he was last here and receiving mostly justified criticism/hate

Yeah but idk if you can even say that. The two 40/20's are kind of a wash for the 3 or 4 less line break assists.

Porque no los dos?

I reckon we'll see Chanel Harris-Tavita 7, Asi 6 before the year is out. Something's not quite right with Shaun Johnson after that injury so picking he'll be taking another enforced time out at some point.

Sure its ridiculously premature now but a chance to track changing opinions if he can string 2-3 good performances in a row.
We can track who said what when if he does end up being the real deal
Asi is a year younger than Chanel and has played much fewer games (11 vs 44) so to show so well so early in his career suggests he will over take very quickly? Just a thought.
Considering their ages, i would rather make this an asi/Chanel Harris-Tavita vs Shaun Johnson thread.

Attack wise Shaun Johnson has been better but both are not great so far this season imo.

But Chanel Harris-Tavita is in another realm in terms of defense and its not even close. He is like having another lock or center defending at 6 and its not just the way he physically tackles the opposition its his great reads and his great scramble. Obviously we all know now how tough the guy is, imo we would do better without Shaun Johnson for the rest of the season than without Chanel Harris-Tavita.

You are probably right, Shaun Johnson is my favorite warriors player ever and maybe im judging him this season compared to how he used to be but i cant help but feel extremely disappointed with what he has put out this season.

I knew we were not going to be getting the quick stepping version of Shaun Johnson but i thought we would be getting a player who can throw great cut out passes to our winger and who could involve walsh a lot more in attack.

Shaun Johnson had been doing a good job of last tackle kicks which is nice.

The thing that has stuck out to me is how off he is in his distribution. I remember that first week when things weren't clicking and we all put it down to a lack of combinations and trying too much too early, but his passes have been regularly missing their mark by being at the players shoulders/knees etc. Walsh has phenomenal hands, and they have saved Shaun Johnson a couple of times because he has plucked a couple of loose passes from Shaun Johnson that he had no right to gather.

Silky passing and setting up overlaps is something I'd consider as SJs true strengths, so it is for that reason I have been disappointed with his start.

He looked great in the last 10 minutes on Saturday though. Hopefully he felt good too and can continue to grow back into form from it.

But, yes just by having him on the field he does a lot that goes unnoticed and unpraised just through experience and vision. So does Reece Walsh for me. A slow start to the season on attack and he has been criticised for his defence, but for me his defensive positioning, handling and kicking utility have trumped RTS's bumbling showings last year even though it isn't the flashy stuff. I'd also much prefer a young player works on those defensive foundations early rather than just focusing on the attack side too. It shows maturity and a player that is willing to roll his sleeves up and improve as a footballer.

This question is more interesting than at a first glance as it highlights to me that Asi is our best traditional 6 (excluding Walsh 😉) and Shaun Johnson and Chanel Harris-Tavita are both 7’s.

Chanel Harris-Tavita may be the better player but not the better 6.

It’s a interesting problem for the coach in how we want to play the game.
Hmmm, what about Volkman and Metcalf? lmao.

Its about coverage, plain and simple.

Chanel Harris-Tavita has ALWAYS been our long term 7. But hes playing bloody good at 6 and engaging the line, what he doesnt have that Volkman and Metcalf and somewhat Asi have, is torque (Metcalf has long distance like Walsh).

Whilst I get your point. its not about Chanel Harris-Tavita vs Asi (after 1 game), its where will all of those players fit in. Which is why I think the thread is pointless as its discussed elsewhere and less of a "who is better" type manner as they all have something to offer.

I think you and others are way overstating where Chanel Harris-Tavita is at right now. Yes he’s been a lot better than last year however in my opinion he still needs to improve a lot before I would be happy with him as a long term half at the Warriors.

Maybe, but creating a thread in suggestion its Asi vs Chanel Harris-Tavita who for the first time has an actual real fair dinkum quality experienced half to learn from his absurd.

But I also think Chanel Harris-Tavita has grown immeasurably as a classic 6. He has the game management skills of a 7, so if he can get his 5/8th skills just a little further with the LBA's, TA's and line breaks then he will be an amazing half capable of anything long term. But more importantly it will take time in combination with a high quality half like Shaun Johnson, which given Tohu was his first half role moral, hes come a long way (being stuck alongside Kodi no wonder he hasnt stunned anyone). Add to that hes probably our best defensive player in the whole team or close to it.

I think its a bit churlish getting down on the Chanel Harris-Tavita and suggesting a guy after 1 game should replace him. Especially given Chanel Harris-Tavita is still very young him self and showing so much improvement. It is no surprise he has found his form as a 6 (just as good as Asi in most games) after the rubbish he has gone through to finally be in a quality squad with a quality half to give him guidance along with Stacy. I think given that, he will keep improving, and when hes done, or more to the point Shaun Johnson is done, Chanel Harris-Tavita will move to 7 and the club will be all the better for that knowledge pathway, another thing we have done poorly in the past. (like a cricket team that doesnt take on new blood and suddenly all retire at the same time, no succession planning). But Im not sure next year if either Asi or Chanel Harris-Tavita will play 6 yet.

So again, the question should have been where will Asi, Volkman, Metcalf fit into the existing spine and OBs and are they just reserves or will they play in other positions (which is my expectation), but can move to half when players are injured etc. Not some click bait thread Asi vs Chanel Harris-Tavita which is just so laughable as many have already said.

Walsh FB, Volkman 6, Shaun Johnson 7, Chanel Harris-Tavita/Asi Centres, Metcalf wing.

That would be an insanely potent level of X factor and pace across the back line, something of which we have lacked since day 1 as a club.

Well let’s begin judging our halves after a few more games however once again I think you are getting way ahead of reality on Chanel Harris-Tavita. I don’t think he’s even approaching an average half in the comp at this point, not even close. He’s had about as many attacking stats this season as an elite half can produce in less than 80 minutes. Let’s hope he continues to improve and develop into a quality spine player - however I honestly think your views (and you aren’t alone) on Chanel Harris-Tavita are possibly even more absurd at this point than the subject of this thread.

My point isnt really about Chanel Harris-Tavita. My point is we shouldnt be comparing halves after 1 game when the reality is we have just signed another half and we also have metcalf coming.

The question should be, are they reserves or are we extending our back line with these x factor players.

My hope is Walsh stays, Shaun Johnson continues to help Chanel Harris-Tavita wherever he goes but I cant see Volkman not playing 6, unless he is reserve, which imo would be a waste, and if Walsh is there, Metcalf for me has to play wing with his long distance pace.

Chanel Harris-Tavita versus a selection of number 6’s across the competition. Red highlights if their stats are worse than Chanel Harris-Tavita; green if they are better

Chanel Harris-Tavita 7 games - 0 tries; 3 try assists; average 62m; 88% tackles; tackle breaks 0.9; line breaks 0

Old man Foran - 8 games - 2 tries; 4 try assists; average 93m; 88% tackles; tackle break 2.6; line breaks 0.3 - better in every area

Matt Moylan - 8 games - 1 try; 4 try assists; average 80m; 80% tackles; tackle break 1.9; line breaks 0.1 - better in every area except defending

Luai - 8 games - 3 tries; 5 try assists; average 60m; 86% tackles; tackle break 2.4; line breaks 0.4 - clearly better at attacking

Sam Walker - 8 games; 2 tries; 3 try assists; average 81m; 81% tackles; tackle break 3; line breaks 0.5. Better in every area except defending.

Chanel Harris-Tavita is a marginally better defender than most other 6’s. But he’s way below par on attack which is the whole point of a half. He’s not a 6.

Only cavet there is that Walker is the only one with a similar amount of games played (first grade total) to Chanel Harris-Tavita surely.
The others are all far more experienced halves in the sense of the game, and have been playing in top tier teams.

If we compared Chanel Harris-Tavita to teams around/below us it'd be interesting. Up for some more stats wizards rage ? I'm watching telly and cbf using the old noggin' 🤣

I’ll check some more but my observation is Chanel Harris-Tavita is to slow for a 6 (hence the line break, tackle breaks and tries are non existent) and is a 7. The problem is Shaun Johnson is our first choice number 7 and we are unbalanced with the both of them in the team at once.

Chanel Harris-Tavita would not make any of those top teams as a 6.
