Nicolau to join the Cowboys

The North Queensland Toyota Cowboys announced today that Jackson Nicolau had been signed to the club for the next 3 years.

A North Queensland, Innisfail product a talented five-eighth and centre will come to the Cowboys from the Melbourne Storm.


The 18 year old has represented Queensland Under 19’s as well as Queensland Residents this season. He has performed consistently well in the Queensland Cup during 2006.

North Queensland Toyota Cowboys Football Manager Kelly Egan believes Jackson is an NRL player of the future.


“Jackson is a promising prospect that will be a valuable addition to our playing squad. He is a very simular style of player to the former Queensland Origin and Australian player Peter Jackson.†Egan said.

Geez the cowboys annoy me, there so greedy. Why are they signing this guy when they have talent galore in the halves. There like the Queensland Roosters, they buy till they win. They have had these players in the halves this year, Brett Firmen, Chris Sheppard, Shane Muscrat, Brett Mcdonnell. Plus the SOO halfback johnathan Thurston. Now they sign this promising 5/8 whos been regarded to a SOO 5/8.
We have had crap all in the halves, one halfback, 2 utilites, & a lockforward. It just doesn't seem fair. How can we change things???

We'd never have gotten him. Nth Queensland is his home. He was always going to go to the Cowboys unless they didn't want him.

Six players plus more no name halves from QC isn't enough depth? If more than six halves for depth is normal, what does that say about our depth of halves? No wonder our execution is so bad is we've got centres & locks playing 5/8, what does Cleary expect? I hadn't realised how bad we are off in the halves depth department untill i saw the cowboys buy another half already loaded them. Management has to do something to change our depth, otherwise it doesn't matter how good Cleary is. I hope Cleary has a say in the signings & development, we need to start signing juioner halves.

If we had six quality halves and saw a possible future SOO player who was cheap and wanted to play for us I'm sure we would sign them too.

I was talking to a south african guy today who told me about all of these excellent black union players that cant get into the top sides because of racisim. We should get some scouts over there and pick up some raw talent for next to nothing. Id say they'd be stoked just to move over here let alone money. Just a thought.

How many of those players have actually produced the goods though Seb?

Firman was promising got injured then got cut and was picked up at a bargain price by the Cowboys and hasn't gotten close to reproducing any semblance of form. Out of the rest of them you'd really only rate Sheppard as having any real class (Thurston exluded)

This kid has been earmarked as a potential play maker but to say it's not fair and that they have a stock of halves and that something must be done is a bit rich. At best they have a first grade combo and a couple of fringe players for their halves and if they can sign a kid who's been produced from the area who wants to play for them so be it.

Your claims it isn't fair also goes against one of your key philisophies, albeit with a different theme. You say kiwi's on a kiwi team, well surely there should be Queenslanders on a Nth Qld team.
