My heart says yes....
Reports with Ciraldo are absolutely glowing also....doing 'little extras' like going to Fiji for Kikau's Father's funeral without Kikau knowing (until he arrived). Also meeting the young gun half formerly from Brisbane and eating an ice cream with him getting to see what makes him tick - the young gun chooses the Bulldogs over a host of clubs $500 000 and yet to debut.

I believe we have the right coach for us - Innovative, tech savvy new age coach that loves Auckland, already knows the positives and challenges of being a Warriors coach and wants to live in Auckland and coach the Warriors for the next 10-15 years. I like Auckland - but most Kiwis may not want to move to Auckland for 10-15 years let alone an Aussie... So we have the right guy. Ciraldo was never ever, ever going to come here but if he did - it would only be a stepping stone to a 'bigger' team in Australia shortly after.

Team... remember Peyton took 1 season and 4 games to get his team with very good cattle and balance to start performing. We need to give our coach more than that and be patient! When/if you become impatient with performances or results - remember ....who is the realistic alternative! Webster needs time to shape his ideas and HIS squad - We need to have faith once again!

When a new coach comes in I wonder how much unlearning has to be done for them to be able to install their culture and systems?

I imagine it would take a whole season to undo a lot of the habits that the players have picked up from the Brown era and being in Australia for 3 years.

What I do like is that Webster has hit the ground running without much impediment from the sounds of it.

I'm more interested in his in-game coaching but happy to hear there is a lot of positive buzz at the moment while we wait for the season to start.

100% agree , but not so much shape the squad but shape the process and system from Juniors right to first grade.
Needs at least 5 years minimum imo.

I think we can be contenders in all three grades as soon as next season. And I think we will exceed expectations in all grades this year.
I honestly think we'll struggle this year in first grade. If we get higher than 13th, I'll be surprised. Why?

1. Our draw sucks. The first 11 rounds could see us done for the season.
2. One pre-season doesn't fix the bad habits of prior years.
3. Only one real starting prop (who could be ruled out with suspension or injury). Go forward still dictates who wins games.
4. An aged Shaun Johnson.

What I would consider a success this season:
1. Any finish above 13th.
2. A team that shows they can defend to a structure and with attitude/heart.
3. Successful blooding of our young talent.
4. Finishing the year knowing who our top 13/17/20 are.
5. No 50 point floggings.

That'd give me hope.

Basically need career years from Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and Te Maire Martin to rescue the spine, and all the forwards to stay injury free, can afford one major injury to harris/Addin Fonua-Blake/niukore/curran/barnett and thats about it

And have no (good) depth outside of the backrow, all fans think their number 18-30 players are decent and just need a shot, in reality they would get outclassed. a few injuries and suspensions away from something like Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, Kosi, Berry, Pompey, Montoya, Te Maire Martin, Volkman, Afoa, Lussick, Harris, Curran, Niukore, Ford which is a spoon team.

The best thing to hang onto is being home, having the opposition come drag their feet over to mt smart, it has to be worth something. even with the refs. And a better coach, but he can only do so much.

I don’t mind coming 13th. I just want a hard nosed team who won’t give up and won’t be used to get another team back in to form.

I want teams to play us and lose the following week because of how hard we smashed them.

I can live with 13th as long as there’s an identity we can all define by the end of the season and a character that shows we’re not an easy touch.

Too much emphasis on getting up early as the solution.

Good article,

I think you can read into it Wrighty that he values preparation and planning. By starting early he works out what he wants to get out of each session.

It’s a bit of a teacher approach but a number of good coaches have a teaching background. It’s a bit of a puff piece but I think that is a style of coaching that will work for us given that NZ players need more technique work than their Australian counterparts.

Webster gets up early, because it's his choice. What's that got to do with the team?
Bluey used to get up early as well. That was to get through the Auckland traffic. Getting up early isn't unusual for people living in Auckland. Either to get through the traffic or like Webster to get their own exercise in before they start the day. That can get you nice and awake and is a good way to start your day.

When Bluey started the article in the pre-season where he discussed arriving early he said he wouldn't work too long as he wanted the work life balance and time with his family. You read a lot of the long hours coaches do, especially the top guys as they obsess over details.

The key thing will Webster keep up the attention to detail throughout the season? Working the long hours to review what happened on the weekend and scout the upcoming opposition.

You get my point though right. Getting up super early is mentioned a large number of times in the article and you can tell Webster believes getting up early is a huge if not the most important factor in success. "Start the day right and you will have a good day etc".

It is a common work ethic thing amongst a lot of people.

My criteria for a successful season under webster.

1. Create a competitive team that fights in every match and is consistent in their play throughout the season.

2. Is able to prevent a mid season collapse, meaning he can find a way to win games while we have periods where star players are out injured. If Addin and Shaun Johnson go down and he finds a way to win he will be a miracle worker in my eyes.

3. No blowouts, I can live with close losses but blowouts show weakness, fear and frailty of character and mental strength.

4. Development of targeted junior prospects. Seeing growth from guys like Vailea, Berry, Kosi.

5. Defensive structure and commitment. There must be a clear defensive mindedness and effort to limit scoring to an average of 3 tries per match.

6. Emphasis on winning home games. Mt Smart should be a fortress and should be unbeaten at home. This will remind teams that they wont want to make a trip to auckland for an easy win. Away wins against evenly matched or lesser teams also but home is the emphasis this year.
