PARENTS are calling for the introduction of weight-restricted divisions in junior rugby league because of huge size differences between young players.

The increasing number of children of Pacific Islander background playing in local competitions has seen some players weighing up to 50 kilograms more than other kids in their own age group.

At an under-10s match in Sydney's west yesterday, nine-year-old Fotu Luani barrelled through opposition players, scoring three tries for Blacktown City. He was one of seven strongly built boys of Islander background in the team.

But parents from the opposing Colyton-Mount Druitt team called for boys such as Fotu, who weighs 85 kilograms and is 168 centimetres tall, to be put up into an older age group.

Donna Meyers, whose son Josh played against Fotu, said she was worried smaller kids could get injured when trying to tackle boys his weight.

"It's not his fault but he should be put up against players his own size," she said.

But Fotu's parents, Monitana and Inoke Luani, who are from Tonga, said their son had always been bigger than normal but his skills were on par with other boys his age.

"I can understand the other parents, they don't want their son to be injured, but this is a game where you are working on skill not on weight and I think that's what it comes down to," Mrs Luani said.

"My son is nine, 10 next month, and to put him in with the under-11s or 12s when they are more skilled than him isn't right."

Fotu's coach, Jim Vanzwan, said Fotu could not be expected to compete against older boys with better fine motor skills.

He said Fotu used to be scared of tackling other players for fear of hurting them, but he had taught all his players the correct technique to avoid injury.

"It's not just his size that's got him where he is, he's really put in the effort to get himself fit and learn to tackle properly and he tackled his heart out today."

Blacktown City parents said weight-based divisions could force players as young as nine to play against 18-year-old men.

"Mentally he's still a nine-year-old and if you watch the older teams play, they've got much more skill, whereas the under 10s just want to score a try," said Carol Padden, mother of Joshua, 9.

Mrs Padden added that rugby league boosted the self-esteem of boys of Tongan, Samoan and Maori heritage.

Primary schools in the Penrith area successfully trialled a weight-restricted division last month.

As well as the usual age divisions, the Panther Trophy held a special competition for children under 48 kilograms.

Melanie Crinion, National Rugby League development officer with the Penrith Panthers, said feedback from parents, teachers and children had been overwhelmingly positive.

wats ur opinion on this? i think he should stay where he is, hes not 11 or 12 yet so he should stay in the under 10s until he turns 11 n 12 , but i gess if i was a parent i mite hav a different opinion, i hav two younger bros n i wouldnt want to c them get hurt, but this kid also wants to play footy, it would b a tough decision 4 his parents to make.

Have to admit, the reason i stopped playing league when i was a kid was because i got sick of getting hammered week in week out by pacific island kids that were the size of grown men.
My old man played senior football for Ponsonby, and fullback for Auckland (could have been under 21's...not entirely sure). He said to me after one game that i wasn't to play league anymore because the PI boys were just to big. Much as i loved league i didn't argue and was please in a way that i wasn't going to be playing anymore.

Whats the answer to this problem? To be honest i don't know. What the under lying problem is, is that PI boys are so much bigger, the problem is they develop so much faster than boys of european decent.
But by the time european boys catch up they have dropped out of the game...as i did.
It's very noticable that since the 70's the number of european boys playing either league or union has dropped off hugely and the soccer numbers in the junior grades have gone through the the roof throughout NZ.
I still have no answer, but thats just my take on things.

No small kids will play if they just get smashed every game, surley he could go up one year level, they are correct in saying that he doesn't have all the skills of older boys.
he might be 50 kilos heavier but when you think about it another way it is also triple the weight, I would not want to tackle anyone that is 300 kilo.

Just grab their legs, they can't run without legs. :)

Yeah, still do, but we had a Russian exchange student at my school once and he must have been about 6 foot 3 and 90kg and I was only 5 foot 10 (6 foot 1 now) and 55kg and he always ran straight at me and I just let him get a bit in front of me and then I dived and grabbed his legs, always worked great.

One russian exchange student don't make a rugby league team. I know what your saying dude and your right...but when you have a team of kids up against you and they all look like adults with kids faces....well something has to give.

Yeah true, I've grown up in South Auckland and have played with a lot of huge guys, and I'm tall but not wide so find it hard.

Who wants to get smashed week in week out? It doesn't bother me getting sore or hurt when i play rugby its part of it, but absolutley obliterated is a different story.
the bottom line is it has to be fun if it isn't why do it? after all league is nothing more than a game.
