Tried watching the game tonight - WTF are the rules?

I like to laugh at the sideline ref throwing the ball over his head!

my dad was a fan so i got this
bounce the ball every 20 feet when running, something like that
can only pass with the fist or kick
catching a kick that goes over 20feet or something earns a free kick (mark) or you can play on
kicking through the centre goal is 6 point (a goal, signified with a 6 shooter double gun cowboy style) unless touched by opposition then its 1 (a behind)
through the side goals is 1 point (a behind, signified with a single shooter gun action)
ball locked up on the ground is a bounce by the ref
the rest is a game of scrag

Have tried watching it before, the scrambling/fumble parts are frustrating to watch.

Good on St Kilda though for putting a bit of a Maori design on their jerseys for the occasion.

bit of an odd game.. just watched the end of the essendon game.
Crowd looks mental, would be cool to watch a game at the MCG

The main point of my confusion is when is it a mark and when is it a free for all?

my dad fell in love with the game when my parents lived in aus for a while.
The thing he loved about it was that everyone dresses in team colours with flags and scarves, theres singing and chanting, and most of all people go as families and he loved that they all supported different teams. Just a fun, friendly day out.[DOUBLEPOST=1366878985][/DOUBLEPOST]

mark is when its caught from a kick that has to go a minimum distance. if not controlled with the hands then its a free for all. it has to be caught properly with control, like 2 hands firmly in contact with the ball, to earn a mark. if not kicked its a free for all.

I like to think of it as a non-magical quidditch, or aerial pingpong.

Grew up watching the All Blacks, then I lived in Brisbane for a few years. Once I got the hang of the game I fell in love with it too. Now I watch league and AFL when I can, and hate watching fat guys leaning on each other in Super 15.
