Thats the balance that we should fill our team with. 30% Aussie or less, the rest made up of locals.
I pose the question that while the Aussie imports just want to be part of a club, but our boys dont want them in the team, hence they way they perform.
Pure speculation of course.

Our scouts have to get out and look for the next Sonny-bill, and players of that calibre

oh!! Silly me, I thought it was because we've been playing like shit all year and we're 14th on the ladder. If we were playing decent football we would've dominated the kiwi's jerseys.

p.s. hope i didn't sound like a smart ass, was tryna make a funny.

To be honest I think a lot of it does come down to coaching, if Sonny Bill DID play for the warriors and never went to Australia, I doubt very much he'd be half the player he is today. hence why so many ex-warriors play their best football AFTER they leave the warriors. We need to invest in some seasoned trainers/defensive coachs etc. Of the Billy Johnson Calibre. Thats where it's at, that's why Toopi is so Dumb! i guarantee if he was at another club he'd be possibly the best centre in the game.
Here's a list of ex-warriors doing well because of some much needed coaching and guidence.

Paul Whatuira
Joe Galavao
Paul Rauhihi
Henry Fa'afiili
Shontayne Hape
Vince Mellars
Henry Perenara
Willie Poching
and so many more.

John Ackland, who signed Sonny Bill as a 14 year old as well as Roy Asotasi and Hutch Maiava, has said Sonny Fai is the best talent to come out of Auckland in 20 years.

The truth is we've always had great talent in our hands but don't know how to get the best out of them, then we release them and they make us look stupid.

Great for the KIWIS though!!!

i disagree i dont think it has anything to do with what nationality the playyers are and that they are makin the nz boys not play as good, the only reason the nz boys are playin crap is because theyre about 3 years past their used by date and ive always believe that its because we have sh*t coachs, ever since anderson left the warriors have had a thing with hiring fresh coaches with no experience under their belt. if i was the warriors management id be lookin at scrappin cleary and gettin a senior coach, someone like john lang or along those lines.

You may have a very good point there, we mightn've have had a coach experienced enough to send these "off" players away. Therefore instead of replacing these "off" players we replace the good one's who have left for more money. So we have a team where the good players have been replaced & the bad players are mostly still there, holding out spots to younger, keener, possibly even more talented kiwis. Then we start to panick when our team starts to crash & bandaid it with cheap, no frills players who "once" may have been good.
They were too impatient for one bad year of footy were we could've had a team full of young kiwi's with a select few aussies, to reap the rewards the next year. Sad there only starting to realise this now. I also think the blame goes way beyond coach.

in the long term, hiring bargain bin aussies does nothing at all for kiwi league. a classic example is webby being the kiwis fullback. most people were horrified when he was selected but there was nobody else. we did have a much better fullback but Daniel Floyd was not considered.

we have a similar situation with our halfback/number 6 . we have nobody except stacey- due to retire, thomas- seems a last resort, marcus perenarra- not considered, hohaia - out of favour. instead the warriors persist in sticking with aussie unknown rovelli and fein who is not a halfback. why then do we leave a potential champion floundering in bartercard, hayden karena.

similar story centers/wing. they persist with tony martin, skinny byrne.

why ? we have better players running around locally.

why pay big money to disadvantage the game in NZ?

makes no sense to me.

It worked with Jason Death it worked with Robbie Mears, and now it seems like the Warriors have gotten into the habit of thinking every bargain buy is going to turn into a quality signing.

I'd prefer to see more Kiwis given a go. Martin (goalkicking aside) and Byrne offer nothing that guys like Vuna and Ah Van don't. I know experience is a handy thing to have, but these guys aren't going to get experience until they're given a go. And the more they play together the better they're going to get as individuals and as a team (another reason we need our youngsters in a PL side rather than spread out amongst the BC Cup).

Agree with DMM and must say there is a lot of talented footballers in the local comp. with the right development who could make the warriors jersey theirs to keep.

Haden Karena surely has to had been offered a Warriors contract !!!!

we are developing them for aussie clubs except for a few.

it makes no sense buying aussies when we have better juniors here.
they would be cheaper contracts than the aussie imports..

A way to get more Kiwis in the Warriors? The Warriors need to get a team into the Premier League. That is the only way they can prepare their development players for first grade action in NRL. At the moment, the Bartercard isnt at a level where a player can make the transition smoothly...they will struggle.
If the Warriors can get a squad of elite players (which means of course they will need some good talent spotters) signed from the NJC and enter them into the NSW premier league comp, I think you are gradually going to have less aussies iin its first grade team. With respect to the NZ talent available, having John Ackland at the Warriors will improve their strike rate in terms of picking up real NRL potential talent, and not "duds" as in the past.

What a load of crap, this isnt a New Zealand team, this is just a team playing rugby league. We should have 17 of the best players we can afford, who cares if theyre from china or mars.
Boarder line racists I reakon

Good point, they should be called the vodafone warriors. Actually they are called that by alot of people.
Want kiwis, watch the tests. Im as kiwi as they come, born and bred in Pahiatua. Lived in New Zealand all my life. But this is the NRL, you guys need to get out more

If I had my way all aliens of aussie descent would be deported tomorrow. I've had a gutful of their lying cheating ways. Look at steven price. I wouldnt trust him as far as I could kick him. Pull your finger out Winston Peters. Your the foreign minister you bludger.

I think the warriors would be more effective with New Zealanders in it because kiwi kids want to be warriors, the same way Queenslanders want to be Bronco's.
Even though league is professionall and meant to be a business from apoint of veiw, to win in any sport Heart plays a big part.

For one, nationality of a person should never be used against them
Secondly there is no code in the NRL that states player from either australia or new zealand has to play for a specific club. For those to think that there is alot of Aussies at the Warriors...they never ONCE whinged about the fact back in 2001 an aussie unknown coach was taking over the side; or the fact some of the best players during that time were aussies. And now people are so against it.

If you think how many aussies are in the Warriors, then just count up how many kiwi players at all the other Aussie clubs? Is that fair? The fact that half of the kiwi players don't even play on this team but are in australia.

I believe this argument is coming back down to grass roots. You can't tell a person where they can or cannot play. You wouldn't say to Benji Marshall for instance that:
"You HAVE to play for the Warriors, you shouldn't be at the Tigers" It's totally wrong. Players have choices, and if they want to leave or beliee they can suced somewhere else it's THEIR decision and nothing should change that.

I don't see what the big deal is, if you have a group of players that you know make up a good, good team who bloody cares if their aussies/kiwis or poms. They are the best players you've got so use them.
