Hynes, TPJ, Young to debut for Blues in Origin opener

AuthorNRL.comTimestampMon 22 May 2023, 08:36 AM

New South Wales coach Brad Fittler has named his 18-man squad for Game One of the 2023 Ampol State of Origin series on May 31.
After starring in the Sea Eagles' win over the Raiders, Tom Trbojevic has been included in the squad and is once again expected to partner Rabbitohs superstar Latrell Mitchell in the centres with captain James Tedesco at fullback.

Josh Addo-Carr returns to the Origin fold and will line up on the wing along with Brian To'o – one of five Panthers picked in the side along with Jarome Luai, Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo and Liam Martin, all of whom were part of last year's 2-1 series loss.
The Panthers have the highest representation with five players followed by the Rabbitohs with three and Bulldogs with two.
The reigning Dally M winner, Nicho Hynes, has been named on the bench and is the one of three debutants listed among the Blues for Game One, joining Raiders forward Hudson Young and Bulldogs enforcer Tevita Pangai Junior.

Elsewhere, Tyson Frizell is set for his first Origin game since 2020 after earning a recall to the side, while Wests Tigers captain Apisai Koroisau won the battle for the hooker position over Rabbitohs rake Damien Cook.
Sea Eagles star Jake Trbojevic, who played Game Two and Three last year after missing Game One, is unavailable due to a calf injury.
Rabbitohs centre Campbell Graham has been named as 18th player.

Origin debut awaits Walsh as Morons make mass changes

AuthorNRL.comTimestampMon 22 May 2023, 09:04 AM

Morons coach Billy Slater has opted for in-form Broncos fullback Reece Walsh over Knights star Kalyn Ponga for Game One of the 2023 Ampol State of Origin series.
The 20-year-old is the sole debutant named in Slater's 19-man squad for the opener on May 31, which features five players who didn't take part in last year's 2-1 series victory over the Blues.

Dolphins enforcer Felise Kaufusi has missed selection as he faces suspension for a high tackle on Storm captain Christian Welch. Kaufusi would have required a downgrade on his Grade Two charge in order to play in Game One, but has instead been listed outside of the squad by Slater.
Two of Kaufusi's Dolphins teammates – Thomas Gilbert and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow – have been named, with the pair set to replace Origin veterans Kurt Capewell and Dane Gagai in the run-on side.

David Fifita's impressive form in 2023 has seen him earn a return to the side, having last played for Queensland in the first two games of the 2021 series, while Welch also returns to the wider squad after missing last year's series through injury.
Ponga, Gagai, Corey Oates, Josh Papalii (retired), Kurt Capewell and Jeremiah Nanai (suspension) are all notable omissions from the squad after they featured in last year's triumph over the Blues, with Tom Dearden named as 18th Man.

I’m not sure how Hynes gets into the game unless injuries. Surely it won’t be a straight swap with Luai. And he’s not coming in for Teddy or Cleary. Year after year Freddy struggles how to work his bench. Think this is what QLD do much better. And that NSW bench looks average at best

Will be interesting to see how that plays out. I'm also a big fan of Damien Cook, not sure what he has done wrong to be dropped. Apisai Koroisau is a good player so I hope he goes well.

I was a Queenslander fan growing up then switched to the Blues when Queensland was dominant for so long. Sort of an underdog thing and the Queenslanders got a bit arrogant.

Now I find I’m getting back in the Queensland bus.

As you can probably tell, SOO has never really been a big deal to me, it’s on to late on a week night!

Started reading that list and first thought, wow! Addo Carr is the fullback! What happened to Tedesco? Then when Cleary was on the wing I knew something was up 🤣

To give myself some credit I had just read the Queensland team first which was in positional order instead of alphabetical…

Who would want to be a centre at NRL level?

It seems the elite fullbacks gobble up all the centre spots at representative level to fit them all in.

Truly mind boggling. I'll have to read the Dogs forum after work, should be interesting.
The Bulldogs coach after the game yesterday said they have simplified his game this year and he’s been responding well.

Averaging 130m this year and 91% tackles, which is average for a prop but you would expect more from a SOO player. Having said all that he is finding form and ran for 213m in yesterdays game.

As a comparison Addin Fonua-Blake is averaging 149m and 95% tackles (I know he’s not SOO but he’s our benchmark!).

I almost want NSW to lose so Freddy gets fired baffling choices by him every year if the rumour about him getting an extension if NSW wins is true then lose the series

TPJ and Frizell shouldn't be in the squad and Hynes on the bench lol

Queensland have them in the forwards.
If Turbo and Mitchell are switched on that won’t matter as much as normal. They could dominate in the forwards and NSW still win by 20. The biggest issues for NSW will be penalties and making sure TPJ keeps his head aswell as the lack of spark from the bench with no Cooke.

NSW should have just chosen Hynes and had Cooke on the Bench.

Yep Freddys had his chance. He’s had the better team on paper every year but always loses!!
