I disagree with that, but I'm not disagreeing with you. Stats mean a whole deal of shit and that's what coaches use when it comes to selecting squads the world over when it comes to every single sports.

If you are having an off day the stats say so.

If you are having an off month the stats say so. The coach will then begin to plan whether that player is in a rut.

If you are having an off first quarter of the season the stats say so and then the coach has to react faster and if it's affecting the team then he has to change things up to get things back in action.

So then another person comes in with better stats, maybe sooner than a quarter of the season, and he plays a blinder and takes over. The stats says alot.


I was keeping an eye on the NRL stats checker for every player and found that Luiciano Leilua, (Joey's brother) was constantly getting around 50 and above points whilst playing for the Tigers and he was performing well in a weak team.

The stats say a lot.

So if someone says 'stats don't mean anything' they are bull shitting and they don't know anything themselves.

Yeah totally. I’m a Supercoach addict and that’s all about player stats. Keeps the season interesting even after the Warriors have turned to custard.

He’s apparently on $520k, hopefully we’re paying no more than 40% so we have $300k to spend for next year.

Yeah I saw that price tag too, also panthers chip in a chunk from his previous contract. Not sure for how much longer though. With the sum and body shape, you’d almost say it’s a substitute for Tohu Harris. Would have wondered about retirement but sounds like he’s keen on internationals again. Guess there could be a scenario where the eels know RCG is not taking up his option, so they prioritise Niukore and let RCG walk.

My understanding is RCG has told Parra he won’t take up his player option for 23’ and can go to the market but will play for Parra next season. It looks like he’s angling for a spot with the Dolphins but could still stay with Parramatta if it doesn’t happen.

I know a lot of people are putting a lot of hope in his return but looking at this I worry that what we get back is pretty much what we had before but older and more injured. A mid/long range kicker, that shovels the pass on rather than gets tackled with the ball and is unlikely to break the line.

BTW he scored 1 try, which put him equal with Kodi given he played half the games. Although Kodi wasnt on the field a lot towards the end of the season but i still figure the stats are still very similar.

Also does Reece fill the role of a long range kicker? i couldnt find his avg kick distances. Lastly does the long range kick have the importance it once did with the significant rule changes? could it be that players easier penetration into the oppositions 40 has dictated that most players are now kicking for more accuracy and less distance?

Just out of interest here is Mitchell Pearce for 2021. Am suggesting a cross comparison as both Shaun and Pearce in 2021 played game management style and are big name players.
Similar numbers between both. Shaun more forced drop outs. Pearce more tries and better defence.

Shaun on a closer review of the stats Shaun played his first three matches at 5 8th and lost all three.
He was then switched to half back where he went 5 wins and 2 losses.
So based on that lesson I hope we play him at half back and not Standoff.

It will be interesting to see what they do with Shaun Johnson next year - do we try to manage his work load in the early months? Do we only play him against the weak teams as that’s where we’ll likely get the most use out of him (I.e he’s likely to help us to a win over Canberra, Doggies etc then to win a game against Panthers, Storm), or do we simply play him until he breaks?

Either way it’s great to have one of the halves who produce the most try assists and forced drop outs in the league over the last few years.

Edit: just a few stats as I was bored this morning.

Cleary 2020 and 2021 - 34 regular games, 34 try assists and 45 forced drop outs (1.3 pg)

Cody Walker 2020 and 2021 - 40 regular games, 51 try assists (1.2pg), 19 drop outs (.47 pg)

Shaun Johnson 2020 and 2021 - 26 regular games, 28 try assists (1.1pg) and 34 drop outs (1.3pg)
