General 2021 salary cap and recruitment - 4 key questions

I guess it is hard to read how good AK is these days since we saw him last. Last time I saw him in ISP he was furious with his team mates as they kept dropping the pill if one of his passes put someone into space.

I would go Nikorima as he seems content to play second fiddle.

If they actually com back later this season would be worth giving AK a run to see if he has progressed as a half option.
It would be interesting to know if AK was signed late in 2018 before the shit storm with Shaun Johnson in the off season as they may have been thinking AK would take over after Green in the halves with Shaun Johnson.

Wizard's rage you come across as extremely well educated with strong critical analysis skills. You are probably one of my top 5 posters to read on this message board.
What is your bio if you don't mind me asking?
University degree? if so in what? what do you do for a living?
Do you live in christchuch? I associate the wizard reference to the wizard of christchurch for some reason.

Inquiring minds want to know. Only share what you feel comfortable with...
Just a sparky that’s done pretty well and likes to think about things. Live in Tauranga 😉

I wouldn’t mind a Nikorima Johnson (kiwis)pairing, both creative, especially with the forward pack we’ll have next year, I reckon one of the best packs we’ve had in a while, with Ben Murdoch-Masila signing, Katoa, Jamayne Tounua-Brown coming up etc.i know it’s only early days but Jamayne Tounua-Brown was outplaying Ah-Mau in those first 2 games, Made over 100 metres each game with little minutes, and hell only get better.

Hi

In my mind we had a good team on the field this year
A step up from last year
But the results and play from them, individual performances notwithstanding, were a level down from our performance last year

Do you agree ?

Hi guys, my next podcast is going to look at the Warriors 2021 squad, salary cap and recruitment. I'd love to get the forums input on the 4 key questions that I think are the hardest to answer:

1. With Blake Green (and AK) off contract and probably gone, would you move Nikorima back into the halves with Chanel Harris-Tavita? If not, would you sign a new first-grade half or take a punt on a young guy like Perham or Turner?

2. With Herbert off contract at end 2020, would you re-sign him, go to market for a right centre/wing, or promote from within? Is Hayze Perham suited to wing?

3. With emergence of Katoa and the signing of Ben Murdoch-Masila for 2021, do we still need to sign a big money edge backrower?

4. With the signing of Ben Murdoch-Masila and the emergence of Jamayne Tounua-Brown, do we still need to sign a big money middle forward? And if you think we still need both a middle and an edge forward, which is the priority?

thanks legends

Hey great podcast fonzie!

With regards to the 4 questions there,

1. I strongly believe we need a experienced half with Chanel Harris-Tavita, the problem is there is no one of note coming off contract and would they even come here? The only one I see is Anthony Milford?

2. I have always like what I've seen from herbert and would like to see him stick around, and hes young so upside? I see G Beale getting cut and even T Milne.

3. Your right with Katoa but he needs that time to fill his body out with the rigors of nrl. I could see him sharing the role with curren who I also think is about to come through?

4. I like that role Ben Murdoch-Masila can do between backrow and middle, looking at the leading forwards for our pack I only see J Bromwich, D Sifiti, D Fafita off contract that would fit that mould. It would be hard to get any of them but I feel we would have a shot at Bromwich? Definitely middle forwards are always a work on at this club.

Great stuff mate thanks for getting me excited about footy again through this lockdown period!

Stay safe yall.....

those first 2 games,
Too many people have overlooked that point, 2 games into what everybody believed was going to be a full season and most supporters here were ready to perform hari kari!
But the course of the season changed very rapidly once it began and looking at those 2 results we lost to two of the better performing teams;
Raiders whom moped the floor with a Titans team many said would finish better than us,
Knights who creamed the Tigers whom again many said would finish better than us.
I also didn't enjoy watching those 2 games but could see improvement in them given the remaining 24 rounds at that time..

Raiders and Knights beat 3 teams who aren't expected to be top 8 - and we're one of them.

I didn't see improvement coming over 24 rounds. That would suggest our development was on an upward curve, and when was the last time we actually finished a season on an upward curve?

Even our last top 8 season we weren't exactly coming into form at the end of the regular season.

  1. Nick politis tried to use the argument that he wanted the first two rounds scrapped as the roosters were going to sacrifice the early rounds and build through the season after a challenge cup that they had to play in the late pre season. They are in a much better position to use that argument than us but I felt we were building in that second game against the raiders. We had a good first half with a few try scoring opportunities. I felt that burrs try was a fair one and Harris eased the player in the air to the ground, that happened in a round 1 match and no penalty blown. After 2018 peaking too early and last year finishing the season on positive note beating the grand finalists, I think there is every possibility we may have built as the season went on this year. Maybe wishful thinking.

We lost 5 of our last 7 games last year including 4 of those losses being 20+ smacking. Beating a Raiders team that rested half a dozen key players and who only just beat us a month earlier by 30 odd points is hardly a positive note.

Nick Politis is a self serving dickhead. Most would agree on that.

We weren't building. We were doing the same thing we do most games under SK. Play completions, hope for penalties, look impotent inside the red zone and then make enough mental errors to allow the opposition soft points.

I don't see them improving either unless they dump the offensive coach and bring in a specialist halves coach.

Which brings me to my next point- Stacey Jones is listed as assistant coach. What is his focus area?
How is it possible our halves are so poor despite having raw talent?
Why isn't Stacy coaching Chanel Harris-Tavita night and day?

I can’t argue with anything you say as you’re correct in all aspects. The mental part you mention is once again a big area. I think if that burr try is allowed in that game we have a different game but once again things don’t go their way and they drop their heads. I felt they were in that game more than the score line indicated. I also felt they were trying to back their attack turning down some kickable penalties in the first half but as you said there’s just no potency to their attack at the moment.

Bromwhich off contract? Hes probably been the best prop of the last decade- definitely the most consistent.
Saw Paul gallen getting interviewed the other day and he said whenever they played Melbourne they always targeted smith and bromwhich coz thats the key to beating the storm.
I know he’s getting on but he’s still got a lot to offer- size and experience to start with.
If he wants to come home roll out the red carpet I reckon.

so we were going to lose all 26 rounds, even the byes??

No. Because forced coaching changes would have happened if we went 0 and 8 to start the season. Ideally whoever they brought in could get them playing better. We actually have a top 8 on paper in mind if we played to potential.

Across the park we have impact players. We have the cattle. Just no shape to our red zone attack.
We have had maybe 30 visits to the red zone in the first two games and crossed the chalk successfully once. That is the worst conversion rate in the history of the NRL.

No offensive coach will do anything while it's SK's game plan.

They don't get to do things how they want, they coach within the parameters of Kearney Ball.
