Wasn't the old format pretty much always played in England during their season but our offseason(pretty much a trial)?

Not taking away the wins but odds were stacked in favour of the ESL clubs
As stated above the odds were always stacked in the Super League teams favour. NRL teams would come in cold whilst the SL teams already had 2-3 regular games to be match fit. There is nothing in this world that gets you match fit apart from playing in real contests. Also have to remember that NRL teams would often treat the WCC as an inconvenient distraction and send B grade teams...

Anothrt largely unmentioned problem that the super league teams is the European economy in the post GFC world.

Thier currencies are hugely devalued against the NZ$ and the AUD compared to ten years ago and austerity measures have pushed their taxes up even further.

They simply can't match the wages of European club rugby or the NRL anymore and are now almost totally reliant on their youth developmemt and over the hill NRL imports for players.

In one off finals matches across all the incarnations of best in ESL vs best in NRL finals.

Yeah, one offs maybe be but in the only format competition were the two comps aren't playing staggered season, preseason games , like a WCC final piss trip to England the northern hemisphere got owned and if it was ever played again they would get owned a again. In the past there have been good individuals but it has still been more misses than hits.
