Albert Baskerville
Born in Waiorongomai, a small rural town on the outskirts of Te Aroha, Bert Baskerville left school at 14 and began working. By 1906 Baskerville was using his dual assets of size and speed as a prolific try scorer for the Oriental rugby union club, equally effective as a loose forward or outside back.

In an era of primitive communications and transport and with players facing the threat of lifetime suspension Baskerville persuaded many of New Zealand's finest rugby union players to live his dream of playing the new Northern Union code on a nine-month odyssey to Australia, Ceylon, Britain and home again via Australia.

Baskerville's insight led to the establishment of rugby league in New Zealand and was a major factor in its introduction to Australia. He is deservedly recognised as the founder of the international game. Tragically he died of pneumonia in Brisbane on the final leg of the tour by his 1907-08 All Golds at just 25 years of age.

Mark Graham
Mark Graham was a back-rower and former captain of the Kiwis. An Otahahu junior, Graham played in 29 tests, captaining the Kiwis in 18 of them and scoring 7 tries from 1977 to 1988.

After winning premierships with his club in New Zealand he played eight seasons in the Brisbane Rugby League premiership with the Norths club, as well as the New South Wales Rugby League premiership for the North Sydney Bears between 1981 and 1988. He travelled to England to captain the newly promoted Wakefield Trinity club in the 1988-89 Rugby Football League season.

Mark Graham was one of the initial inductees of the NZRL Legends of League. He was inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame. He went on to coach the Auckland Warriors in the National Rugby League for two seasons in 1999 and 2000.

In August, 2006 Graham was named at second-row in the North Sydney Bears' Team of the Century. In 2007, he was named at second row in the New Zealand Kiwis Team of the Century and also further honoured as New Zealand's rugby league Player of the Century. In 2008, Graham was also named at second-row in a Norths Devils all-time greatest team.

Nathan Cayless
Nathan Cayless was a professional rugby league player and captain of the Parramatta Eels in the National Rugby League up until the end of 2010. His position of choice is prop forward.

While attending Parramatta Marist High, Nathan played for the Australian Schoolboys team in 1995 and 1996.

He chose to represent New Zealand at senior level and became one of the Kiwis most-capped players, appearing on 38 occasions between 1998 and 2009. He was part of the squad for both the 2000 and 2008 World Cups, and captained the Kiwis to victory at the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.

He retired from international rugby league in April 2009, to focus the rest of his football career on the Eels where he holds the record for the most games as captain of any team in the NRL.

Went to the National Secondary schools comp yesterday, and well wasn't wowed by the schools from outside of Auckland, they definitely play with heart but can't match the intensity of Kids that play Auckland comp - spotted a few NRL scouts yesterday ,finals will be a better show.

The Wai-Coa-Bay Stallions and the Wellington Orcas were welcomed out onto Mt Smart Stadium tonight by an enthusiastic haka from the visiting Taita College. Taita, in town for the week for the National Secondary Schools tournament, provided vocal support for the teams throughout the game, cheering, singing and chanting to the end.

While the Orcas ran out convincing winners, the Wai-Coa-Bay Stallions never gave up despite having had a limited preparation, with a number of their players having club and representative commitments up until last weekend.

At 28-6 to Wellington at half time, it could have easily become all one way traffic, but to their credit the Stallions dug deep and scored 20 points in the second half. Both teams will be back at Mt Smart next Monday, with the Stallions playing the Counties Manukau Stingrays while Wellington will play the Akarana Falcons in the televised game.

Wai-Coa- Bays Stallions: 26 (Love-Henry, Rameka, Gordon, Karena, Koko Tries; Karena 3 goals)
Wellington Orcas: 46 (O'Brien 2, Maccormick, Ulberg 2, Lesoa, Masanga, Gregorious Tries; Maccormick 7 goals)

Half time: 28 - 6 to Wellington
Referee: Daniel Caddy

Before St Pauls reign began it was MAGS that won over 15 Auckland school titles and it was only achieve because the 1st XV guys were available. This is the reason why we won and again MAGS will rise if the school rugby league season is move to term 3 to accommodate our 1st XV's.

Happy days for Mount Albert Grammar School after springing the result of the week by beating St Paul's College in today's semi-final at the New Zealand Secondary Schools' Rugby League Nationals. Photo: Photosport

Mount Albert Grammar School has upset defending champion St Paul’s College to make tomorrow’s grand final against Kelston Boys’ High School at the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Rugby League Nationals in Papakura.

St Paul’s came into the nationals after winning the inaugural College Rugby League Warriors Cup championship last month.

En route to beating Kelston Boys’ High in the Warriors Cup grand final, St Paul’s had overwhelmed MAGS 34-22 after leading 34-0 early in the second half of their semi-final.

In today’s semi-final at Bruce Pulman Park, St Paul’s raced to an early 12-0 lead but MAGS, coached by Vodafone Warriors legend Steve Price, staged an outstanding comeback to win 16-12.

In the second semi-final, the Dave McDermott-coached Kelston Boys’ High led 12-4 at halftime before holding on to win 18-14.

Mount Albert Grammar will play in its first premiership final while Kelston won the title in 2003. The match is due to kick off at 12.45pm tomorrow.

The final in developing schools’ competition will be contested by Rotorua Boys’ High School and St Thomas of Canterbury College.

So gutted I wont make it to the MAGS vs Kelston final. Some excellent match ups tomorrow...

Well they made the semi-final in the Auckland Competition without their rugby players..and beat st Pauls in group play from memory.
Not too sure how many rugby player played - but I have heard only 2 or three rugby boys.

I assume Brody Lam played as he has been signed by Newcastle.

I think they are enough league players available at schools not too bend over for rugby.

I have heard De La Salle are looking to play league next year.
They would of probably made the final if they were in it.

To play in the National secondary comp DLS need to play in the Warriors cup , which they turned down flat, union to strong in that school - they get to much money from NZRU, pity because some of our best junior players have all come from DLS.

Nathaniel Roche stands out for me from MAGS, that kid has wheels to burn, one thing I gave Steve Price is that he gave a few league kids a go from under 16's and 17's teams in the Auckland comp, was impressed how well they went.

they have turned it down in the past but there is a bit of public pressure coming from parents etc.
I reckon they will flip next year.

Yeah the Warrios have unleashed Tuimoala Lolohea who still has two years of 20s.

Then they have Brady Abbey & Roche in the wings - both who can play halves or fullback
Have only seen glimpse of them - but look like superstars.

Brad Abbey looks like a josh dugan type player.
Roche is tough like foran, with a bit more speed - probably a 6 longterm.

We always have enough league players at MAGS but the best players are in the 1st XV and its the reason why MAGS have won more than 15 titles before St Pauls dominated.[DOUBLEPOST=1379088925][/DOUBLEPOST]

No schools in New Zealand gets money from the NZRU. Its all funded by the students, sponsors or the schools themselves.[DOUBLEPOST=1379089111][/DOUBLEPOST]Great to see Kelston finally coming into the mix. Like MAGS they have a large numbers of Paciifc Island students and are both good at both codes. Might see the same schools in the final of the national condor school 7's.

Well once again ...I disagree - that Nathaniel Roache is the best player at MAGS imo.
He is a league boy - and I assume played in the First XIII all year.

That Brody Lam goes alright also obviously he is rugby player .

De La Salle would win the league - they have some of the top league players in the country - most of which dont play rugby for school.
Just play club league.

Manger East Hawks are aligned with local secondary schools in our area to coach and facilitate league for the Warriors cup; Money is definitely given to them regards to equipment and whatever else, heard that 1st hand from a HOD of sports who was in the 1st 15 set up; De la salle college turned around to us last year and told us why they don't support league and one major point was the funding they get from union, new equipment each year they reckon - that school supplies a high number of our best age group juniors coming through for years; DLS couldn't play in the national comp this year because of the rule change for Auckland schools - they must have fielded a team in the Warriors cup to qualify; IMO DLS would of been up there with St Pauls and MAGS - from my count there's 3 maybe 4 contracted warriors 20's for 2014 still attending DLS.

Yeah but I wouldnt take the schools word for anything.....the real reason the old boys network dont want it to happen
They always make excuses they just dont want league to take off.

In a modern day scenario - there will be more and more pressure for schools to bow to the hunger for league

I work with Andrew Vaa and at De la Salle and also help out with Tangaroa College with Pacific Island kids and no they don't get funds from the NZRU because the NZRU have their hands full funding super rugby and ITM cup teams. The structure is very similar to rugby league the clubs gets very little fundings from Auckland RL/RU and schools will have to fund their own equipments and expenses. De La Salle College gets sponsors by Samurai sports and also gets funds from pokie machine money through a trust.
The best player at MAGS is George Edwards who is tossing up a move St George Dragons or Highlanders at the moment. De La Salle had a meeting for students early in the year but as soon players were given a choice of league on wednesday or rugby on saturday but can't do both the majority chose to stick with rugby. Eventually De La Salle will be playing in the Warriors cup sooner a help from clubs like your will go a long way as this wasn't the case in the 80's or 90's. When MAGS won many RL titles in the 70's, 80's and early 90's many schools like St Pauls, Hillary, Penrose, Otahuhu college had plenty of Auckland and NZ reps in their ranks.

Is George Edwards the First-Five? Has he played league.
Or is he the best rugby player?

Lam signed with Knights - and I think the 2nd five signed with somebody also.

But only seen him play a few times but Roche could be anything.
He is tougher than edwards.

He will play 20s next year.

A game of rugby league was held privately at Fowls park so St George can look at the some of the kids at school. St George asked for George Edwards, Brody Lam, Leif Schwenke, Jack Goodhue, Lona Halalolo and Matthias Heimuli with a few kids in the MAGS national runner up under 15 union team but the school decline for them to be poach. Brody is already committed to Newcastle Knights but is having second thoughts and want to join his older brother at the police training college.[DOUBLEPOST=1379162512][/DOUBLEPOST]

Rugby league kept itself from schools because the clubs didn't want their players picking schools over them. That was one of the factors we face when we tried to get teams to play in the University cup in the 80's. De La Salle has played RL before and was never in the top four.

Sounds dodgy lol
If an NRL club has interest in a player - the school has no say.

Also St George havent really scouted NZ juniors much.
So I dare say it was a NZ based scout - just getting a look. Showing some interest.

While a few rugby converts from MAGS will go alright - it is the kids playing regular league either school, rep or club league.
That I think will be the ones that will be most successful.

I read that Heimuli kid got played of the year in the Warriors comp. So must be pretty solid.
He might get a trial at Warriors then

That might of been in the 80s - but the clubs in reality have little control of what their players decide to do.
Although I assume there is a little tension - many clubs are working with schools.
Mt Albert Lions would be smart to work with MAGS - especially because MT Albert dont have many junior players at that 18s level.

There are kids and parents wanting teams all over Auckland - it is the school that is stopping it from happen.
But all it takes is some public and parent pressure - soon these schools wont be able to say no - it will be too much bad PR come their way.

I realise De La Salle has played league - I remember Henry Faafili played for them 2nd year 7th. lol

Trust me they would come close to winning it.
Not 100% who goes there.

But league boys alone they would have some of the best league players in the country.

Paul Tuli - Warriors NYC - will played next year and will probably be starting prop for NZ 18s
He has a little brother who is in the NZ 16s cant remember his name

Ofahiki Ogden - he is a freak - 6 foot 3 - 100kgs plus - fast as a winger etc. will played Warriors next year.

Also I think Marvin Tauhinu - who played First XV this year - He is a gun. I think he has signed with Knights.
Add this together with a few First XV boys - equals a team hard to beat.

Tuli, Ogden & Tauhinu - would be too strong and physical in a game of league.[DOUBLEPOST=1379195363][/DOUBLEPOST]

As for the school declining - they have no say. If a NRL club want to sign a player and the player wants to.

Never heard of those players - bar I have heard of that Heimuli guy.
I think he got player of the year in warriors comp. He must be pretty solid.

However there are a number of young LEAGUE players that attend MAGS also.
If will be these players who I believe will more succesful in the long run.
