Jersey Information
Made in honour of Awen playing 10 seasons for the club and worn in his 11th and final season at the Warriors. The design reflected Awen's Maori and Tongan heritage.
The actual match worn jerseys were handed out by inaugural captain and Warrior #1, Dean Bell on game day. A game that Awen would have missed due to injury if it weren't for the fact that it was his testimonial game. Heavily strapped up he made the field in heavy rain to help the team edge past the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks 12-10 at Mt Smart Stadium during their Round 22 clash.
Most of the match worn jerseys were auctioned at Awen's testimonial lunch which was organised by Sir Peter Leitch and held at the Ellerslie Convention Centre on 20 July with over $100,000 raised for various charities. MCs included Neil Waka of 3 News fame and comedian Mike King.
Awen actually had to fund the purchase of the jerseys himself as any involvement from the club or Puma would mean it counted as part of the salary cap. 54 jerseys were made in total.
A few facts about this jersey. The first and to date the only player given a testimonial jersey. First jersey in the clubs history that featured sublimated players numbers. First club jersey that incorporated Maori and Island designs.
