A graduate from Southern Cross Campus, Maumalo burst onto the scene in 2012 with the Counties Manukau Stingrays. He had been a standout with the Papatoetoe Panthers and was elevated into the national competition with the Stingrays in late 2012.

A spot in the NZ Residents 18s squad capped off a successful year for the then 18-year-old. On the back of this he was offered a spot in the Vodafone Junior Warriors side, scoring three tries in six NYC matches in 2013 and establishing himself as a first-choice player in 2014. He finished his NYC career with 11 tries in 28 matches including one in the club's grand final win.

Joining the NRL squad for the offseason, Maumalo caught the eye with his efforts resulting in him being selected to represent the Vodafone Warriors at the 2015 NRL Auckland Nines. He also featured in the NRL trials and was on target to make his NRL debut in the opening round of the season. Tragically a hamstring injury in the final round ruled him out but he later earned his belated call-up when he replaced an injured Manu Vatuvei against Parramatta.
