I’m interested in the derision being thrown at labour for announcing a policy re increase in Dr numbers due to the current shortage as if it is their fault

How long does it take to become a Dr?
According to Akld University med school to become qualified is 6 yrs and then there is hospital residency

So doesn’t the fault lay with the Government in power over 6 years ago?
They had a great opportunity to allow doctors in over the last 6 years and refused to. In fact some even left because they couldn't get their families in and buy a house. And maybe if they announced this 6 or 3 or even a year ago it might have looked proactive. So, yeah. Too little too late.

So no blame attaches to the Government prior to Labour taking over even though it takes yonks to train a Dr???

Bro, they all quit due to the workload and went to Aussie.

Our highest doctor pay rate is what Aussie doctors start on.

And then we were dumb enough to actively stop doctors coming here during a pandemic.

Definitely. It has been continued underinvestment by many preceding govts before this one. They are all to blame for not investing where needed.

Similar to what we are seeing in infrastructure, housing, education. It doesn’t happen overnight, but incrementally gets worse. Not just the last National govt is to blame (and they should be blamed), but a fair few govts before that too

The criticism of Labour is
1. It took National’s announcement of a third medical school for Labour to react by announcing they are doing something, and
2. Labour has taken 6 years to do anything (despite a covid crisis). So a lot of us are cynical

Every property owner pats themselves on the back about their feeling of wealth, but that’s off the back of a growing population, which actually needs continuing investment in infrastructure to ensure a similar quality of life

It's always easy to blame the previous crowd and yes, of course some fault lies there. But there has been a shortage for how long now? Think about the money spent on mental health and no improvement. Have we got anymore intensive care beds they talked about? The lack of desire to fast track doctors and nurses during covid. The inability to secure ones that were already here. Why has it taken 6 years to do something? Sure, it was the other guys fault. You can't excuse doing nothing for 6 years. This, like all the recent stuff they have tried to announce just sounds like a Government with no ideas that has been forced to try and come up with something. Unfortunately they have no track record to fall back on that would make them sound credible.

I actually feel sorry for Hipkins. He doesn't have an engagement or wedding story' to fall back on for a distraction. Maybe he could give Cindy a call and see if she wants to make an announcement? Or is that charade off now she isn't PM?

It was proposed back in 2017 that Waikato University set up a medical school to have it running by 2020. That would mean those their would be in their third year if it had been given the go ahead.

TBH, I think it would be better to help with the current crisis if more resources were put into the Medical Council to get overseas trained medical staff qualified to practise in NZ instead of having them drive Ubers or working at McD’s.

Pretty disingenuous comment.
However not uncommon recently from the right

I'm in Auckland and can't recall a sprinkler ban in 2018.
Maybe I have the year wrong, was it 2019?...whatever there was a ban..
I know a dude who had an automatic system that didn't make a lot of noise, he put it on for the middle of the night, and his neighbour dobbed him in 🤣 🤣

I understand the major problem with training new doctors is not at the university campus, but the amount of space available in hospitals for on the job training. It has been an ongoing issue for years.

So if Labour are announcing an increase in numbers, without immigration,, they are bullshitting.

He did alright when he was Auckland Mayor, got the city moving then Dick came in thinking he could do better and slowed all the progress down.
Early 2000's were relatively prosperous for NZ, and being very pro business, I'm sure Auckland did very well. He did too dodging that conviction.

Anthony Scaramucci, the intelligent press secretary that Trump fired after few weeks , and who is a successful hedge fund manager tells the story of some of the really terrible people you can meet in business in New York.

He says they are way worse in Washington DC.
Got a link to that Scaramucci story Bruce?

Our media has no credibility because they are ignoring this and it’s only opinion pieces behind paywalls that show how stuffed we are:

In 1990, the outgoing Labour Government faced a combined deficit of $14.4 billion over the four financial years from 1990/91 — around $29.7b in today’s money. (This led to the Ruth Richardson’s years.)

Tuesday’s Prefu forecasts an operating deficit of $27.6b over the first four forecast years, a similar amount in real dollars to what Richardson faced in 1990.

We are as economically stuffed as the Ruth Richardson years. Yet the media focus on a few hundred million on Nationals tax cuts.

In fact, it’s much worse. The 1990 numbers assumed the Government would maintain Caygill’s wild spending. Tuesday’s numbers already have big spending cuts built into them.

To take Robertson seriously, you have to believe he and his colleagues, after six years of profligacy, are belatedly committed to unprecedented fiscal rectitude, maintaining it to 2026/27.

You’d need to believe Robertson will cut spending, not just in real but in dollar terms, on schools, universities, the police and housing over the next three years, and that he’d slash about $1.9b a year from the Wellington bureaucracy, a quarter of what it spends now.

The cost of the dole would go up by only $500m and health would barely keep up with inflation.

Likewise, despite Labour’s National Defence Strategy released last month, identifying China and climate change as threats requiring big new investments in the military, Robertson now claims that the defence budget will flatline.

On revenue, Robertson’s targets depend on record net immigration of 250,000 over four years, without extra infrastructure, education or health costs associated with the new arrivals.

If Robertson believes any of this, it’s clear Treasury doesn’t.

Pointedly, it blames the fiscal deterioration on unexpected government spending as much as on wider economic factors.

It says that if the next Government increases spending each year by even $1b more than Robertson’s baselines — perhaps by reversing his police, education and housing cuts — then New Zealand will never return to surplus.

The same is true if tax revenue falls by that amount, barely a rounding error.

Either would mean debt servicing costs, already forecast to reach nearly $10b in 2026/27 — four times what Robertson would spend on police that year — would blow out further.

Debt servicing would keep rising every year into the future, with ever more of your taxes going to foreign bondholders rather than schools, until we couldn’t afford it anymore, leading to default.

Unsurprisingly,
yields on 10-year government bonds have increased by 25 per cent since May, and now sit above 5 per cent, levels not seen since immediately after the Christchurch earthquakes.

Bondholders are now demanding much higher returns to keep lending us money.

Former Finance Minister Bill English aimed for zero budgets. Willis needs to deliver below-zero budgets.

So we’re in the shit, tough times ahead, facing a permanent structural deficit, leading eventually to a 2009 Greek or 2014 Brazilian-type collapse that will require early 90’s style hardline govt response… yet the silence from the media is deafening.

Finance Minister Nicola Willis’ words, ‘Labour has wrecked the joint.’
