We’re in a really dangerous place, I don’t see democracy surviving this

The ole chestnut about going out with a Whimper unfortunately is true. I hate that coz using quotes from people like Twain, Washington, Jefferson, or whoever is a lazy ass way of trying to sound clever without using your own brain...and Yanks do love to use and abuse quotes in the time of the interweb.

America has been here before. This is not new, segregation lasted into the 60s. The difference from Jim Crow is these kients are gonna segregate white people, well that's why we're all scared, coz we've seen that before too, when White people are targets of a White regime, no kient is safe.

Canadians must be terrified. I think they better buy some French subs quick smart, and be prepared to use them.

I just hope my kids don't end up being invaded by the US in their life times, we would have to surrender our sovereignty peacefully of course, for us Resistance is not an option.

You know it's a dark irony that here we were, the safest by virtue of being the farthest, but all a sudden our isolation makes us a must have by 'freindly American Elites wanting to use our geo distance to Jet here if shit kicks off.

The first rule of a democracy is never use your military against your own citizens in peace time. Any member of the armed services that is legit knows that is the Rubicon.

It is scary that they are going to make it impossible to safely make a complaint in the US military.

As the law expert points out, they are going to make it so that if they don't agree with your complaint - that they will go after you personally.

The Military is already a dictatorship by necessity, when you join the Military you forgo some of the rights of citizens - for example the lack of union representation in the Military. This is for obvious reasons, chain of command, insubordination, mutiny etc.

This as we know well makes service people vulnerable to exploitation, sexual misconduct is one clear example, there are many others, clearly the American fascists want to be able to discriminate with extreme prejudice, with no checks and balances, they also want to populate their forces with the wrong kind of people, zealots and bigots, useful servants of the fascists.

It is easy enough for the American Fascists to make military service compulsory, thereby subjecting the populace to these controls. And we have seen before in other dictatorships - citizens armies (Joe Bloggs who is big and fat wears a uniform on the street corner to display they belong to the 'party' and are the local representative in your neighborhood - eventually everyone is a party member or they are in camps).

People say Trump is better than what could be, that we should accept his crap because what comes after could be worse.

The assumption is that some political figure more extreme is likely to take over. The same arguments have been made about any tyrant for time immemorial, it is a shit argument, a non argument, a load of bollocks.

The far right have placed the Military at the center of their power grab. To me it is obvious that this increases the likely hood of a world post Trump which is not controlled by a Politician, rather America is shaping itself for a bloodless coup where the Emperor will wear a Military Uniform.

And that will be the end of it.

This Journalists makes some interesting points about the new Fascists.

Specifically she points out that while it is useful to draw comparisons to past Fascists like the Nazis, Mussolini etc, what we should be looking for is what is different about this fascist movement.

One thing that is different is the diversity of the followers, you have his base, you have these billionaires, and you have the tech industry.

What unites them she argues is this belief that these are the end times, and they are going out to screw the planet as far and fast as they can because in their world view the end of the world is imminent (and by their direct actions in destroying the planet for profit they are the cause and the accelerant).

You have these looney CEOs that want to live on Mars. Because they know they are destroying this planet.

You have these Christian Nationalists that believe in the Rapture and other book of Revelations signs.

And you have AI which is exhausting our resources at an unsustainable rate while being accelerated without checks and balances making the risks more rather than less likely that AI becomes an existential risk to humanity.

Ok ignoring the Terminator Judgement day stuff, she makes a really good point that from the Pov of AI (allow some ironic use of POV and AI....it has no POV) there is no desire to preserve the natural world because its world is an artificial world. To me that makes sense as an undeniable existential risk from AI which needs no science fiction to understand it.

She calls this binding force of the far right in America an apocalyptic fever, a shared and unifying belief that the world is ending and she makes it clear these people know in their heart of hearts that climate change is real, they know that we are running out of resources and poisoning our ecosystem, the danger is they have this nihilistic view of the future which is self created.

It is interesting to consider that the last truly threatening fascist regime (world threatening) happened in a nuclear free context (this journalist I keep calling she - apologies Naomi Klein, makes some brilliant discussion points).

I know my posts have the same doom alarmist end of the world tone to them, but this why, look....the shit is happening, I want to go to my grave knowing I said something, even if it is was here where is doesn't matter, because it matters to me.

And I know that a lot of people are feeling quietly nervous, because while they may not be as outspoken, or jump so readily to the enth degree of the worst case scenarios like I am, they know, like I know, that even if the shit doesn't collapse completely, we are in danger....period.

I hear my kids say every so often, thanks Dad and Grandad for leaving us nothing and destroying the planet and leaving us no future. They say it in a dark humored way, but they mean it, they have no hope, they feel there is nothing to believe in, no cause to get behind, no great figures of inspiration to guide them, no better world to strive for. Nothing greater than themselves.

And yet they join these groups that go out and clean up parks and reserves, weeding noxious plants, and all that carry on with oldies....because they do believe in something, they are trying in this sense of futility to do something, something humble, but something direct and symbolic in their lives. Then they get on their computers and make money or blow shit up and post GG well played with the rest of their spare time.

I’ve wondered if the worlds shift towards an authoritarian feeling place and the eroding of rights slowly has been the ushering in of a new world superpower in China in where it conducts itself largely in an authoritarian manner? It feels like it coincides with covid into the world and that the world really has felt like a shift in this period that largely hasn’t gone back and doesn’t feel like it will. Although China are polluters, they’re committed to goals and participate rather than the recent denial of trump. I feel like their rhetoric in recent times around fascism has been very deliberate knowing the sentiment of much of the world and what they’re witnessing. Putin has played trump and that consortium of leaders at China’s military parade collectively are unbeatable in my eyes. The 33 countries that have opposed Palestinian statehood did so because of America and their pressure in one form or another to which we are apart of unfortunately. This number would have far greater only 10 years ago but shows the shift in who many countries seem to be backing

I’ve been watching docos on the state of the world following the first world war leading into the second and the similarities are stark with a battle between left and right for dominance, just some different actors and victims

Normally I cannot be bothered because of the toll that looking into Pandoras box brings, or in todays parlance going down the rabbit hole.

It gets tiring arguing with people that have tainted logic.

America is corrupt, both sides, through and through, but the appearance of morality is important from top down because otherwise you empower the haters to go around shooting people when you have a hateful group in charge.

One of the most corrupt moves in US politics in recent times was Joe Biden pardoning his own son.

But that was a corrupt action in isolation in as much as it posed little threat to others. Not justifying it, just saying, thanks Biden for further enabling the Right wing Fascists to ignore the rule of law.

I point out that example because if you ask these right wing cultist, they can't admit when their leaders go horribly wrong. I would have more respect for them if they called out MAGA when MAGA is in the wrong. But they don't have the moral compass or open mind to be able to bend and flex in search of honesty and decency.

A man who lies to himself constantly is not the best placed to argue facts and truth eh.
