Album: Do We Expect Too Much From Young Players?
One of my main criticisms of our players is an apparent lack of a 'league brain'. Silly mistakes under pressure, dumb passes or offloads, defensive reads, poor last tackle options... all of them are what are costing us games.

Phil Gould, as big a tool as he can be, made the valid comment that it takes 4 or 5 seasons for a new player to develop an 'NRL body' that can stand the rigours of the competition.

Sicne the mental side of the game envelops tactics, handling pressure, needing to instantly change tactics if needed, what to do if things go tits up, internal strength, personal conduct etc, I was wondering if we're not expecting too much from our young guys mentally?

If it takes at least a few seasons to develop the necessary physicality, surely it's going to take longer to develop the mental game? I think that shows the necessity for a certain amount of continuity in the side and persistence with players, even when they do fuck up.

Thinking on it, I'd hope that the club's training regime revolves largely around that mental stuff, cos damn near any muppet can pump iron and get fit.
